Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will seem familiar to anyone who’s played a racing game before, but it has some unique features. Whether you’re new to racing games or jumping over from Mario Kart, it’s good to know what you’re doing before you race.
From keeping your speed up to defending against enemies, here’s what you need to know to get started in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
Know Your Vehicle Classes and How They Affect Racing
It might seem straightforward—speed, acceleration, handling, and so on—but in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, vehicle classes function differently than you might expect.
For example, power vehicles can bump into walls without losing rings. Boost vehicles excel at power sliding and tricks, but they slow down significantly when hit by weapons. Handling vehicles are easier to control on land, but their performance can vary when you’re in water.
Master the Starting Boost System for Faster Launches
Forget what you know from other games like Mario Kart. In Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, to get a good start, hold down the acceleration button at the start of the race until the needle hits the green zone. Timing is key—release it if you see the arrow go back down to optimize your launch and start faster.
Turn Off Turning Assist
At the beginning of each race, you can turn on turning assist, but it’s best to leave it off. Especially if you’re experienced, it can hinder your control. Even for beginners, leaving it off helps you weave through obstacles and take shortcuts more easily. If it gets accidentally turned on, you’ll notice you don’t feel in control of your kart, making it harder to drift or avoid hazards.
Save Defensive Items for the Right Moment
Early access revealed that the item pool in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is quite punishing. If you’re in first place, don’t expect to keep a large lead forever—other racers have plenty of items to catch up or slow you down.
Hold onto defensive items instead of using them immediately. A hazard dropped behind you can be a lifesaver if someone targets you with a weapon. Though you can drop weapons when attacked, it’s usually better to save your defensive items for when you truly need them.
Avoid Playing as Guest Characters
This one is a bit controversial, but you might want to avoid playing as guest characters, especially in single-player mode. They don’t have voice lines and don’t participate in rivalry races, which are a key part of the single-player experience. These races offer a challenge and feature dialogue between your character and your rival, which you won’t get with guest characters. In multiplayer, it might be fine, but for the full experience, it’s better to stick with the main roster.
Keep Power Sliding in the Water
In Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, you can power slide even in water, which is unusual for racing games. You don’t even have to turn—simply hold down the slide button while going straight to build up boost.
Avoid Bumping Into Walls Without the Right Gadget
crashing into walls costs rings unless you’re using a specific gadget. If you’re not in a power vehicle, hitting walls can set you back pretty badly. Some gadgets remove this penalty altogether, making power vehicles less useful. It’s a good idea to get that gadget—it’s a major advantage because power vehicles tend to be less reliable.
Use Gadgets Frequently
Finally, don’t forget to use your gadgets. They are incredibly helpful and improve as you level up. As you race more, you’ll unlock more abilities, such as faster boosts, carrying more items, or attacking rivals while drifting. Make sure to visit the gadgets menu regularly—you might miss out on some powerful abilities if you don’t.
Remember, mastering these tips will give you a much better chance at winning races in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
