Zombies are everywhere in John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, and they don’t hold back. From large zombie hordes to occasional nightmare monsters charging straight at you, the game quickly throws you into intense situations. It’s a fast-paced game focused on teamwork, so just running around shooting zombies won’t get you very far.
There are many mechanics and systems that can make the game easier once you learn about them. From moving through objectives to making better use of your gear and abilities, knowing a few tips early on can reduce the stress of those first missions. These beginner tips will help you get started quickly.
Get To Higher Ground Whenever Possible
When the zombie apocalypse hits, staying on the ground isn’t usually the best place to be. Positioning is key to surviving large waves of zombies. Whenever possible, try to move to higher spots such as rooftops, platforms, or ledges. These spots give you a clearer view of approaching enemies and make it harder for zombies to surround you from all directions.
High ground also helps you control choke points. Zombies tend to rush toward the nearest path to reach you, which makes it easier to pick them off before they get too close. This is especially useful when special enemies show up, since a clear line of sight allows your team to focus fire effectively.
Note: While high ground is powerful, don’t isolate yourself far from your teammates. Staying close enough to support each other makes sure you can revive fallen friends when needed.
Focus on Your Mission Objectives
It can be tempting to treat every fight like a survival mode and just mow down endless zombies, but that’s rarely the best strategy. Most missions are about completing specific goals like collecting items or activating devices.
Getting distracted fighting everything in sight slows down progress and increases pressure because zombies keep spawning. The situation becomes much harder if you don’t stay focused on your objectives and move toward completing them instead of wasting time. Keep an eye on the objective marker and prioritize reaching it.
Aim For Red Weak Spots on Strong Enemies
Some enemies in Toxic Commando are like walking tanks, so spraying bullets randomly isn’t the most efficient method. Many tough foes have glowing red weak spots that take much more damage than other areas. These weak points are your best chance to take down dangerous enemies quickly.
Instead of firing at random parts, take a moment to aim at these glowing, pulsing spots. Coordinated team fire focusing on weak points can eliminate powerful enemies much faster, saving time and resources.
Use Alternate Fire Modes on Your Weapons
Many guns in the game have alternate firing modes that change their behavior. On PC, press B to switch between them. Some modes are better for controlling crowds, like a spray of bullets, while others focus fire on specific targets, like single-shot mode. Using the right mode at the right time can improve your efficiency in combat.
Collect Sludgite Whenever You See It
Sludgite appears as glowing orange shards scattered throughout missions. It acts as currency used to upgrade gear. These shards allow you to buy attachments that boost your weapons and performance.
Because Sludgite can be overlooked during fights, make it a habit to pick it up whenever passing by. Even small amounts add up and can make a significant difference for upgrades later on.
Mark Dangerous Enemies for Your Team
Communication is crucial in cooperative gameplay. Marking enemies helps alert your teammates to threats that require immediate attention. When you face tougher enemies or ones using special abilities, mark them so everyone knows where to focus.
Marked enemies stand out, helping your team react faster during chaotic fights. This becomes especially helpful when multiple high-threat enemies appear or visibility is limited.
Check the Map and Gather Spare Parts
Pressing Tab brings up the map, which is more useful than you might think. It shows your objective location along with the positions of spare parts scattered around the level.
Spare parts are valuable for reinforcing defenses against upcoming zombie waves or acquiring special weapons. Strengthening certain areas can make longer defense missions much easier. Always check the map and grab spare parts when close by to ensure your team has the resources to hold out longer.
Use Your Class Abilities Wisely
Each class offers a unique ability that supports the team differently. Using these skills thoughtfully can drastically change how a mission unfolds. Instead of activating abilities immediately when available, save them for moments when the team needs an advantage most. Well-timed use of abilities can turn a losing fight into a manageable one, helping everyone press forward.
