In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, players have the option to embrace vampirism, but it’s essential to think things through before making a permanent decision. The main draw of becoming a vampire, aside from the aesthetic appeal, is the various buffs it provides for your character’s stats, alongside new gameplay mechanics. However, adopting this dark path also brings a range of challenges, including the need for caution when wandering during the day, facing certain foes, or engaging in illegal activities.
Rest assured, if you find that vampirism isn’t your style after all, you can easily go back to your former life. One critical point to remember is that the cure for vampirism is permanent; once you’re cured, you can’t revert back to being a vampire. Therefore, it’s crucial to fully grasp the implications of vampirism in Oblivion Remastered before diving into that lifestyle.

How to Become a Vampire
Bite Me
You can become a vampire in Oblivion Remastered through three primary methods, ranked from easiest to hardest. The simplest approach is to be attacked by an existing vampire. You can encounter vampires throughout the game’s world, especially early on if you take on the quest "Order of the Virtuous Blood." They’re also commonly found in the sewers beneath the Imperial City, particularly in the Bloodworks, which is accessible from the Market Sewers.
Every time a vampire attacks you in close combat, there’s a chance you could contract Porphyric Hemophilia, a disease that eventually leads to vampirism. To do this, just visit locations with hostile vampires, engage them in combat, and let them hit you while you heal until you notice a pop-up indicating you’ve contracted the disease.
Porphyric Hemophilia will turn you into a vampire if left untreated for 72 in-game hours. Even if you heal from it, you can contract it again; it’s only the cure for full-fledged vampirism that is irreversible. The first three times you sleep after the 72-hour period, you’ll experience interrupted rest filled with weird dreams and gain some vampiric powers. After waking up for the third time post-infection, congratulations—you’re officially a vampire!
Msirae’s Heart
In addition, the Mehrunes’ Razor DLC provides a unique method for becoming a vampire. You’ll need to travel to Sundercliff Watch, a vast dungeon located on the eastern edge of the map, right beneath the "s" in Lake Canulus.
Once inside, complete the quest "Unearthing Mehrunes’ Razor." At the end, you’ll have the chance to remove a Beating Heart from the body of Msirae Faythung. Consume this heart, and you’ll contract Porphyric Hemophilia, leading to vampirism after three days.
Note: You can also create a potion that infects you using the Beating Heart, but this requires maxed-out Alchemy skills.
Keep in mind that consuming Msirae’s heart also grants you four points of Infamy, which may affect your interactions with certain NPCs. Additionally, you’ll incur Cannibal’s Prion, which lowers your Agility and Intelligence by 20 points each. You won’t be able to cure the Cannibal’s Prion without also eliminating your Porphyric Hemophilia, so plan accordingly. If you’re just waiting to transform, that might not be a significant issue.
Dark Brotherhood
Lastly, joining the Dark Brotherhood is another way to become a vampire, though it involves more quests. To pursue this route, you’ll need to engage in several quests assigned by Vicente Valieri:
- "A Watery Grave"
- "Accidents Happen"
- "Scheduled for Execution"
- "The Assassinated Man"
After completing these missions, Vicente will offer to turn you into a vampire. Simply select the "Dark Gift" option when speaking with him, and the quest "Darkness Eternal" will commence.
Warning: The quest "The Purification" will prevent Vicente from transforming you, so ensure you accept his offer before proceeding with that quest.
Afterward, you’ll have to rest somewhere. Vicente will visit during the night, and when you awaken, you’ll be notified that you’ve contracted Porphyric Hemophilia, setting you on the path to becoming a vampire.
Pros & Cons of Being a Vampire
Feeding
Once you become a vampire, you unlock a new ability: feeding on sleeping NPCs. To do this, walk up to an NPC and press the interaction button (E on PC, A on Xbox, X on PS5). The buffs and debuffs associated with vampirism are linked to how long it’s been since your last feeding.
It’s advisable to feed in places like guild halls and inns where many NPCs sleep. Just be cautious; feeding counts as a crime, and being caught will incur a bounty of 40 gold. Most NPCs won’t awaken from feeding, except for guards, who are likely to catch you in the act.
Buffs & Debuffs
The following table summarizes the buffs and debuffs associated with vampirism:
| Time Since Feeding | Vampirism | Skill & Attribute Bonus | Normal Weapon Resistance | Fire Weakness | Sunlight Damage per Second | Ability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25% | +5 | 5% | 20% | 0 | Hunter’s Sight: Grants Night Eye and Detect Life for 30 seconds. | |
| 24–48 hours | 50% | +10 | 10% | 30% | 1 | Vampire’s Seduction: Charm target by 50 points, once per day. |
| 49–72 hours | 75% | +15 | 15% | 40% | 4 | Reign of Terror: Silence and Demoralize for 60 seconds, once per day. |
| > 72 hours | 100% | +20 | 20% | 50% | 8 | Embrace of Shadows: Night Eye for 90 seconds, Invisibility for 180 seconds, once per day. |
Elsa have benefits for stealth-focused characters, providing skills that enhance sneakiness and enemy detection. However, it also presents a significant vulnerability to fire damage, complicating your ability to navigate key story missions.
Other Advantages & Disadvantages
Here are the other key benefits and drawbacks of being a vampire:
- 100% resistance to disease and paralysis.
- You will suffer sunlight damage when exposed during the day, affected by factors like sun position and weather.
- You can’t fast travel or wait while taking sunlight damage; planning is essential.
- Your appearance will change with pale skin and altered eye color, dependent on your character’s race.
- Some NPCs will refuse to interact with you at advanced levels of vampirism, while others may show less affinity.
Consider saving vampirism for later gameplay. It can complicate early challenges, especially with underdeveloped stealth skills and limited fast travel options. It might even hinder your progress in the main quest, making it wise to experience most of the game before diving into this dark path.
How to Cure Vampirism
"Vampire Cure"
If vampirism turns out not to be your cup of tea, the traditional coping method in the original Oblivion was the quest named "Vampire Cure." This has made its return in the remastered version, and I suggest opting for the Font of Renewal method instead, which is simpler and quicker.
To start "Vampire Cure," inquire with any NPC about a "Cure for Vampirism," and they’ll direct you to Raminus Polus at the Arcane University. He will then send you to Count Hassildor in Skingrad, requiring you first to get Hal-Liurz’s consent to speak with the Count. Eventually, you’ll be directed to the witch Melisandre, who will ask for five Grand Soul Gems. Once you acquire the gems, she’ll provide a list of ingredients to gather, spending a full day to produce the potion to cure your vampirism.
Font of Renewal
For a more efficient option, just interact with the Font of Renewal located in Deepscorn Hollow, a player house included in the remaster. Travel to the southern island on the map, enter Deepscorn Hollow, and you’ll find the Font of Renewal ready to cure your vampirism quickly and definitively.
