Getting comfortable with Octopath Traveler 0’s battle system isn’t too difficult, especially if you’re familiar with the other games in the HD-2D series. However, the game has some unique features worth noting, such as the active combat party of eight characters, which can change how battles unfold.

Beginners will find this quick guide especially helpful, but even seasoned players who have already explored Orsterra or enjoyed Partitio’s adventure will find some tips useful.

Octopath Traveler 0 offers eight character classes—warrior, mage, rogue, and more—each with subtle differences. You’ll easily recognize the main archetypes: fighters (like warriors and hunters), magic users (like mages), and stealthy characters (like rogues). Many characters fall into these broad categories based on their primary roles, whether absorbing damage or dealing physical or elemental attacks.

It’s important to aim for a balanced party that covers all bases—ideally, including a tank, a damage dealer, a scout, and a healer. For example, swords, spears, knives, axes, bows, and staves will be part of your gear, and most elements will be well-covered with the right skills and equipment. Early on, options for light-elemental attacks can feel limited, so be prepared to equip skills that fill those gaps.

A good break makes a great chance to recover

When battling tough enemies, breaking their shield points is crucial. Breaking an enemy’s shield not only deals damage but also stuns or dazes them. Use this moment to your advantage by unleashing your strongest attacks while they’re dazed, and don’t forget to heal your team during these windows. Regular heals ensure your team remains healthy, especially during boss fights where enemies can hit multiple characters with powerful attacks.

Keep in mind that enemies with high attack power often threaten your entire front row. Using shield-breaking techniques disrupts their plans and creates opportunities to heal or perform powerful assaults afterward.

Maintain vigilance on turn orders

Always watch the turn order bar at the top of the screen, as it dictates when characters act. Skills that delay or cause enemies to act later can be very beneficial. If an enemy’s upcoming action is pushed back by speed-reducing effects, it gives you extra time to react or prepare.

Additionally, some skills can cause enemies to act after their turn, effectively delaying their attacks. Equipping these on key characters can keep dangerous foes—like boss characters or high-speed enemies—at bay longer. Disrupting their actions can buy your team valuable breathing room, especially against tricky opponents who tend to escape or attack en masse.

Keep your best gear in rotation

Gear is limited, and with a large party, it’s essential to manage equipment wisely. Always remember to unequip gear from characters you remove from your active party so someone else can use their equipment. Do not sell gear from characters who aren’t currently in your lineup, as you might need it later, especially in late-game battles where controlling more than eight characters becomes possible. Having proper protection for all party members can make a significant difference.

Stealing can net you double the loot

Many bosses and elite enemies carry valuable items, skills, or gear. If you succeed in stealing from these enemies, you’ll not only get the item but also retain it after battle, along with whatever they would normally drop. Early in the game, stealing techniques are hard to find, but as you progress, you’ll gather more options—so try to keep at least one character skilled in theft.

“Save scumming” can power you up

If you’re willing to reload your game between attempts, you can improve your chances of getting valuable items from NPCs during their Path Actions. Saving before trying a luck-based action gives you another shot without penalty. For higher success rates, wait until your stats favor the attempt to make success more likely. This method can help you acquire rare weapons or items early, but use it judiciously to avoid disrupting your adventure.

Get Olberic ASAP

Once the quest to recruit Octopath Traveler 1’s warrior Olberic becomes available, pursue it. It typically triggers around the midpoint of the “Bestower of Power” story arc. Olberic’s unique skill, Surpassing Power, allows equipped characters to deal more than 9,999 damage—up to 99,999—that’s essential for defeating bosses with huge health pools, especially in the late game. Securing Olberic early prepares your team for the most challenging fights ahead.
