Aunty Ethel is one of the most wicked characters you’ll find in Baldur’s Gate 3. When she isn’t spewing hate, she uses her flirtatious charm to draw you in. As a vile hag, she preys on people in their most vulnerable moments, and she can be a tough opponent when you choose to confront her.
The first encounter with Ethel can be particularly frustrating since she turns invisible. However, with some preparation, you can make this fight easier. Buying or pickpocketing her Potion of Invisibility from the Emerald Grove will prevent her from disappearing during your battle.
Can’t Go Invisible If You’ve Got No Potion
Despite her dark nature, Aunty Ethel, in her old lady form, can be found at the Emerald Grove selling potions and other items. Interestingly, whatever she has for sale can be used in battle against you. If you take her Potion of Invisibility before the fight, she’ll stay visible during combat.
It seems many assumed that her invisibility was just one of her powers. In reality, she drinks the potion. By stealing it, you make the fight much more manageable. Given how despised she is, reducing her advantages will feel quite rewarding.
This tactic can be useful against other characters too. One player mentioned, “This also works with Balthazar and his speed potion. If you swipe it from him before the fight, he can’t use it.” Balthazar is another annoying foe that can make battles tedious.
However, there are some downsides to this strategy. Another player pointed out, “She can also use anything you sell her.” Some even reported her throwing smokepowder bombs at them in battle. While it’s unclear why anyone would trade smokepowder bombs to her, I plan to buy out her entire stock on my next playthrough.
