Once you launch your first save in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, you’ll go through a brief tutorial before diving right into the action. After that, the world is your oyster! You can focus on the main quest or explore countless side missions. Alternatively, you can head straight to the arena and start working your way up to become the Grand Champion.
Like other titles in the Elder Scrolls series, Oblivion offers an open-world experience, allowing you to earn some quick gold by engaging in early arena fights. The remastered version keeps this same spirit, maintaining the freeform nature of questing. Surprisingly, only minimal aspects have been altered, and the arena is just one of the many stopping points at the beginning of your quest to save Cyrodiil.
Finding the Arena in Oblivion and Joining
The Arena Opens Up Immediately After the Tutorial
To access the arena, you first need to complete the introductory quest with Emperor Uriel Septim, who is still voiced by Patrick Stewart. This involves a dungeon run that leads you through the sewers. Once you emerge from this dark place, you’ll be ready to pause the game, pull up the world map, and choose an existing location to fast travel. The arena is located in the eastern part of the Imperial City.
Just select the arena on your map, fast travel there, and you’ll find yourself right outside the main gates. To step into the arena and start fighting, simply turn left at the entrance and head down to the Bloodworks (think of this area as your training and preparation zone). Here, talk to Owyn, who’s positioned in the hall opposite the Bloodworks entrance, and express your interest in becoming a combatant to begin the arena questline.
If you prefer to bet on the fighters, you can do so by speaking with Hundolin at the main gate. While you can earn some quick cash here, the true excitement lies in the battles below with Owyn and the other competitors.
Arena Ranks, Matches, and Quests in Oblivion Remastered
Climb Eight Ranks to Become the Grand Champion
Once you’re in the arena and have talked to Owyn, you’ll need to equip a raiment (light or heavy) to enter the battles. The choice between light or heavy armor depends on your preferred playstyle. Don’t stress if you make the wrong choice or lose your gear; there are cabinets filled with spare raiments in the Bloodworks.
From this point, your goal is to climb from the Pit Dog rank to the Grand Master rank to complete the arena questline. Each rank requires you to win three battles, most of which last 60 seconds or less. Here are the ranks you’ll need to progress through in the Oblivion arena:
- Pit Dog
- Brawler
- Bloodletter
- Myrmidon
- Warrior
- Gladiator
- Hero
- Champion
- Grand Champion (the final showdown against Agronak/The Gray Prince)
The arena rules are quite straightforward. As long as you’re in a raiment, you can wear your own helmet, shield, and weapon. All spells are permitted inside, so if you prefer casting, you’re still in the game. Ultimately, how you choose to confront the arena is up to you, but melee characters often find success early on, especially before gathering all their spells and upgrades.
Make sure to utilize the basin of renewal after each match—a stone font of water that completely heals your character. If you choose a class like Knight or Warrior before finishing the tutorial, you can gain an advantage and earn some early-game gold from your victories.
For an Edge in the Final Fight, Complete the Gray Prince Quest
Adds More Depth to the Arena Experience
Agronak, the final boss, can be found practicing on a training dummy in the Bloodworks, away from the audience. Talking to Agronak allows you to embark on the Gray Prince questline, which reveals his backstory and how he became the Grand Champion. This quest is simple: after your conversation with Agronak, a quest marker will guide you to Crowhaven, a fort located to the west of Cyrodiil.
Fast travel to Anvil and head northwest to reach Crowhaven. Navigate the fort until you find Lord Lovidicus, Agronak’s father. Here, you have two options: you can either engage him in combat and take his diary (titled "Journal of Lord Lovidicus") from his bedroom or sneak in and steal it unnoticed. Once you return to the arena, Agronak will be in distress, leading to an automatic win for you in the final Grand Master fight. Alternatively, you can choose not to finish the quest and face Agronak in an equal match.
If you decide to pursue the Gray Prince storyline, make sure to wrap it up before challenging Agronak directly in the Grand Master competition.
After you’ve completed the Gray Prince quest and defeated Agronak, you’ll have experienced everything the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered arena has to offer. Feel free to place bets on fights or enjoy the sights whenever you find yourself in the Imperial City.
