The puzzle categories for today’s Connections game are quite ambiguous, unlike those from earlier days, so prepare yourself for some challenging word associations. I found that several phrases were designed to mislead, making it tricky to connect words that initially seemed straightforward. To avoid falling into the same trap I did, follow these useful tips to steer clear of errors.
Today’s Connections puzzle was particularly tricky due to the seemingly simple concepts that can be easily misinterpreted. The underlying theme is centered on false similarities; it’s easy to link certain words based on superficial connections, even when they have no real ties to each other. Since you have only four chances to go wrong, those subtle tricks can quickly catch you off guard if you don’t tread carefully.
Hints for Today’s Categories
April 16, #675
I faced quite a challenge while working through today’s puzzle, but one strategy that helped me was concentrating on the functions of the words instead of my first instincts. For instance, the word SCAR might first bring LION or SIMBA to mind, but that’s just a diversion. Those looking for Lion King connections will miss out on more sensible associations.
The categories can be misleading today; use these hints as a guide to what they may entail:
- One category concerns clothing items from the Victorian era.
- One category involves actions that inflict damage.
- One category relates to things that produce a lot of noise.
- One category focuses on terms for cultural dances that have slight variations.
If you’re keen on gathering clues, be sure to examine the category names for additional insights. There are also spoilers available for each category if you find yourself needing help with one to complete the puzzle.
Today’s Connections Answers
Yellow Answers: Explained
- BURLESQUE WEAR
- BOA
- CORSET
- GARTER
- STOCKINGS
This puzzle proved to be a real brain teaser for me. I initially linked BOA and GARTER to MAMBA, thinking of snake species. Although those two words fit within this section, I didn’t quite make the connection with Victorian clothing until later. After my first wrong guess, I realized I could tie GARTER to a garter belt, which led me to connect it with STOCKINGS and CORSET alongside BOA to complete the category.
Green Answers: Explained
- MESS UP THE SURFACE OF
- SCAR
- SCORE
- SCRAPE
- SCRATCH
Putting together SCRAPE and SCRATCH was fairly straightforward for me, though I initially stumbled over SCAR, mistakenly thinking it was a reference to the Lion King. However, I eventually recognized that SCORE is not just related to sports but can also mean to mark or damage something, which helped me connect the ideas.
Blue Answers: Explained
- THEY ROAR
- CROWD
- ENGINE
- KATY PERRY
- LION
The name KATY PERRY stood out to me immediately, but figuring out the connections took some thought. It was clear that she attracts a big CROWD during performances. I soon realized that both ENGINE and LION should be linked with the sounds they produce rather than their literal meanings to solve that part of the puzzle.
Purple Answers: Explained
- LATIN DANCES WITH A VOWEL CHANGED
- MAMBA
- MERINGUE
- SIMBA
- TANGY
This category confused me extensively while I was working on the other segments of the puzzle. I only started to recognize the theme here after I had solved the others. Realizing that SIMBA was a play on the Latin dance "Samba" and TANGY referred to "Tango" came later, confirming my thoughts for solving the remaining pieces.
