In The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian really shines when it comes to character conversations, and the best way to experience this is by recruiting as many companions as possible. There are six companions you can bring along, and you’ll want to get all of them. Luckily, they’re quite easy to find after you unlock the second planet in the game.
Val (V.A.L.E.R.I.E.) is one of your default companions received right after completing the introductory mission. When you wake up from a 10-year sleep, you’ll meet Niles and Val — Niles is a damage dealer and tank, while Val provides healing and support. They make a strong early team, but it’s a good idea to find more allies as you go to form the best crew.
Niles is with you from the very start. He even has a special quest you can start shortly after meeting him. During your exploration of Paradise Island, you can encounter his old comrade Zeb and gain access to additional companion upgrades to boost your team.
Inez can be found early in the game on the first town, Farfield. After meeting the town’s minister, Milverstreet, you’ll see Inez talking with him. If you offer her a spot in your crew, she’ll join. Keep in mind, to unlock her full potential, you’ll need to complete her specific questline to earn her special skill. Be careful—if you take too long, she might die if you don’t finish her quest.
Tristan becomes available after you return to your ship on Paradise Island and explore two new locations: Golden Ridge and Free Market Station. To recruit him, go to the second choice bar at Free Market Station, talk to Tristan, and agree to his terms. Then, complete a quest at Golden Ridge called “Arbitrary Measures,” and return to Tristan to add him to your team.
Aza is a unique character because they’re an assassin with a cult background. You find Aza in the Decommissioned Autonomous Extractorium, just north of Golden Ridge. To recruit them, enter the facility, go upstairs, and unlock the door to free Aza, who will help you wipe out the enemies. Convince them after the fight, and they’ll join your crew.
Marisol might be the hardest to find, but she’s likely your last companion. After arriving at Golden Ridge, you need to complete the first part of the “On The Trail Of A Traitor” mission by heading southeast and finishing a story objective. With a special item called the Writ of Investigative Inquiry, you can investigate a crime in her facility and potentially exonerate her, earning her trust and her companionship.
Overall, it’s best to try to recruit every companion you find in The Outer Worlds 2 and pick your favorites for your adventure. Switching out team members now and then can give you new insights and make the game even more fun.
