In Ghost of Yotei, you’ll find many different weapons to unlock. Although the main story eventually grants access to all of them, you can prioritize collecting all weapons early if you prefer. Once you discover a few key areas, there’s no barrier to locating all weapon masters and unlocking the weapons they offer.

The core weapons—katana, dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama, and yari—each have strengths and weaknesses that work against each other, like a rock-paper-scissors game. Mastering them gives you a serious edge in battles.

There are also plenty of ranged weapons, including bows and guns, allowing you to fight from a distance. Additionally, quick-use tools like knives, smoke bombs, and other gadgets can help you escape or get the upper hand quickly. Below, I’ll explain where to find each weapon and how best to use them.

To upgrade your weapons, you’ll need to visit your father’s forge at home. Upgrades boost damage through several stages:

  • Altered: Costs 20 metals
  • Reinforced: Costs 20 metals and 20 Oni Raider Mask Pieces
  • Enhanced: Costs 30 metals and 20 Shinobi Steel
  • Perfected: Costs 60 metals, 15 gun parts, and 15 rare metals

You’ll collect various materials such as metals, Oni Raider mask pieces, Shinobi Steel, gun parts, and rare metals, necessary to improve your gear. For example, the Odachi also requires Shinobi Steel for its Enhanced upgrade, as it doesn’t have an Altered level.

Let’s take a look at the different weapons in more detail.

Weapon pairings in Ghost of Yotei

Each weapon type is most effective against certain others, for instance:

  • Katana is best against other swords.
  • Dual katanas excel against spear-type weapons.
  • Spears have the advantage over kusarigama, hooks, and chains.
  • Kusarigama is effective against shields.
  • Odachi is powerful against large, heavy enemies.

While you’re free to experiment, using these matchups can give you a clear advantage during fights.

The Wolf Blade

Unlocked at the start of the game, the Wolf Blade is your basic sword suitable for many situations. It fights best against other swords, but as you progress, other weapons will become better counters for specific enemies.

The Bow

You can get bows early by visiting Ran the Bowyer at the Shadow Inn. She sells a medium Hankyu bow and a long-range Yumi, which acts like a sniper rifle but is expensive and has limited ammo at first. These are most useful for stealth takedowns or hitting distant enemies.

Dual Katana

Unlock this weapon after completing the “Way of Dual Katana” quest. Dual katanas are faster and less damaging, making them especially good against spear-like weapons, polearms, and pokey attacks. They’re perfect for dealing with Yari and similar staves but are less effective against single blades.

Odachi

Available after finishing the “Way of the Odachi” mission, the Odachi is a large, slow sword great for big enemies. It’s powerful enough to stun foes and interrupt colored attacks, making it effective in crowd fights and against tough, slow-moving enemies.

Kusarigama

Unlocked by completing the “Kitsune” mission, the kusarigama is a sickle with a ball and chain to disarm shield enemies. Its range lets you pull distant foes closer, making it more suitable for specific situations rather than general use.

Yari

You get the Yari after the “Oni” mission and using your spear’s reach to keep enemies at bay is its strength. It’s especially useful against sickles and kusarigama, helping to control space and create openings with poke attacks and kicks.

Guns

Two types of guns are available: the Tanzutsu pistol and the Tanegashima rifle, unlocked after completing the “Guns and Consequences” objective. The pistol offers quick, high damage shots, ideal for bypassing defenses, while the rifle deals significant damage from afar, particularly against armored foes. Ammunition is limited, and firearms attract attention due to their noise.

Quickfire weapons

Speedy tools can be used quickly to escape or gain the advantage. These include:

  • Kunai throwing knives
  • Metsubushi (blinding powder)
  • Oni’s Flame
  • Smoke bombs
  • Various bombs like blind and scorch bombs
  • The Tanzutsu and rifle, which also qualify as quickfire weapons

These tools can be assigned to specific buttons for rapid use in tight situations, helping you turn the tide of battle in an instant.
