HumanitZ can be tough, but it’s also about giving you options to stay alive longer. Professions are a key system that work quietly behind the scenes, boosting your damage, crafting abilities, or survival skills while you’re fighting Zeeks.
Choosing the right starting profession can make early gameplay easier, and unlocking more later can dramatically change how you play. The game doesn’t always clearly explain which bonuses are worth it or just okay, so this guide explains how professions work and why they matter.
All Professions and How to Unlock Them
When you start a new game, you can immediately pick one profession from the available options. Later on, you can unlock more through the Skill tab as you play.
Each profession requires specific gameplay actions such as crafting, fighting, exploring, or building. This design encourages natural play — you’ll likely unlock new professions just by doing what the game prompts naturally.
| Profession | Passive Effect | How to Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Unemployed | Gain 25% more experience | Only available at game start |
| Amateur Boxer | Unarmed attacks deal 300% damage | Get 5 unarmed grapple kills and 10 fist kills with Zeeks |
| Car Salesman | Trading costs 25% less | Complete 5 trades and build 1 CB Radio |
| Chemist | Double magnesium powder yield | Craft 1 Treatment and build 1 Distiller |
| Farmer | Fertilizer is more effective | Build 2 Farm Plots and feed your horse once |
| Mechanic | Vehicle repairs are 25% more effective | Repair 2 vehicles, siphon gas from 10 vehicles, install 1 upgrade |
| Emergency Medical Tech | Healing items are 25% more effective | Use 2 Medkits and craft 10 Bandages |
| Military Veteran | Take twice as long to tire out | Kill 20 Zeeks with firearms and repair 2 firearms |
| Outdoorsman | 10% less sway with all bows | Kill a Bear and build a Campfire |
| Thief | Very low chance of setting off alarms | Lockpick 5 times and grapple from behind once |
| Fire Fighter | Nullifies overheated status | Kill 10 Zeeks with an axe and craft 3 Molotovs |
| Electrical Engineer | Can build powered structures | Build 1 Generator and loot 10 computers |
Which profession is best?
Picking the right profession depends on how you want to play early on, but generally, starting as Unemployed is the strongest overall choice. Its bonus—earning 25% more experience—affects nearly every aspect of the game, leading to faster skill gains and earlier access to other professions. Even though it doesn’t provide immediate combat or crafting benefits, its long-term advantages make it a smart starting point.
If you want to dominate in combat from the start, Amateur Boxer and Military Veteran are solid options:
- Amateur Boxer greatly increases unarmed damage, ideal for fighting Zeeks early when weapons are scarce. It rewards close-range combat and helps conserve resources.
- Military Veteran benefits players who favor firearms, as it allows longer fights and extended looting without tiring as quickly.
For those focused on infrastructure or base-building, professions like Mechanic, Chemist, or Electrical Engineer are more useful:
- Mechanic enhances vehicle repairs, which is critical for longer trips.
- Chemist boosts crafting outputs, especially magnesium powder.
- Electrical Engineer unlocks the ability to build and run powered structures early.
If stealth and exploration are your priorities, Thief and Outdoorsman offer helpful perks:
- Thief greatly reduces alarm triggers, making looting safer.
- Outdoorsman decreases bow sway, improving ranged accuracy against wildlife or Zeeks at a distance.
In the end, there’s no wrong choice—pick what fits your style or play goals, and progress from there.
