While Code Vein 2 refers to them as Revenants, it’s clear that you’re mostly dealing with vampires. Your character isn’t exactly a Revenant, but they’re not completely human either. To survive, they need a way to harvest blood, which is where Jails come in.
In the game, Jails have been around since the original version, but they’ve been updated with new purposes and more of them.
What Are Jails?
On your character’s back, you might notice an exposed heart—called a Jail. This isn’t just a poetic detail; it’s actually used to hold parts of other Revenants so you can use their powers, forming the basis for the new Partner Assimilation system.
Gameplay-wise, Jails are equipment that allow you to perform Drain attacks and gather Ichor for your formae. They take up a specific slot in your gear and are activated with the RT/R2 button. Charging a Jail increases its damage and the amount of Ichor you can drain from enemies.
You can upgrade Jails at MagMell using special materials. Upgrading boosts their effectiveness, increases the damage your partners deal, and at level ten, unlocks a second weapon slot.
Your Partner’s Level and Jail
Your partner’s level is determined by the highest level Jail you own, whether or not it’s currently equipped. The same rule applies to the second weapon slot.
Drain and Bleed Factor
Building up Bleed on enemies is a key part of gameplay. Bleed is stacked over time for use with Drain attacks—more Bleed on an enemy means more Ichor drained from them. Unlike other games, Bleed here isn’t a status effect triggered by specific moves; instead, it’s continually stacked for Drain purposes.
If you don’t have certain traits or boosters, you won’t see how much Bleed has been accumulated, but it builds fast and decreases slowly. Each weapon has a Bleed Factor, and higher numbers mean you’ll deal more Bleed per hit. Since Bleed stays on an enemy for a while, it’s smart to land a series of hits early on to build it up. When Ichor gets low, enemies are already primed for draining.
Every Jail and Its Effect
There are six distinct Jails, each with its own visual style and unique effects designed to support different playstyles. Every Jail also boosts your defense, although some more than others.
Here are the Jails and what they do:
| Jail | Effect |
|---|---|
| Ogre | Quickly pulls you forward a short distance while moving. |
| Bat | Deals low damage with some stagger; can be used from a distance and drains Ichor periodically based on Bleed stacks. |
| Reaper | Performs a parry followed by a wide spinning slash; can hit multiple enemies. |
| Stinger | Travels in a straight line, piercing multiple enemies and draining Ichor from each. |
| Ivy | Sends spikes from the ground to impale enemies; can be placed precisely by holding RT/R2. |
| Hound | Executes two attacks per Hound head, draining Ichor and causing high damage; provides high defense boost. |
Because of their unique effects, it’s sometimes useful to switch Jails depending on your Blood Code or Forma. Materials for upgrades are plentiful, making customization easier.
Where to Find All Jails
Most Jails, aside from the starting Ogre Jail, must be found by exploring. They’re all accessible fairly early, and you can collect them before defeating your first hero, which allows you to use all of them throughout most of the game.
- Bat Jail: Found in the Confluence, the area where you talk to Lou. It’s located on a desk near the mirror and can be accessed after initial visits.
- Reaper Jail: Hidden inside a chest at the Underground Water Plant on MagMell Island, near the bridge to the mainland. Look for a room where a path splits; the Reaper is in a chest beside a single chair.
- Stinger Jail: Located in the Sunken City, in Josée’s Outpost. It’s on the lowest level, right in the middle of the dual paths near a giant hole in the floor.
- Ivy Jail: Found in the Electricial Substation west of the Sunken City. After defeating the boss in this area, it’s in the final room. This Jail can also be obtained earlier in the Present Era if missed during Josée’s Era.
- Hound Jail: Located in the final dungeon of Josée’s Era, in the Sunken Pylon area. You encounter it behind a locked gate, which becomes accessible after taking an elevator back to this area.
In general, aside from Ogre, all other Jails are obtained through exploration. They can all be acquired early in the game, even before defeating the first hero, so players often have access to all of them for most of the adventure.
