All Armor Sets: Locations and Details

Select Language:

“Ghost of Yotei” features 12 different armor sets. Most of these sets come with matching masks, helmets, or headbands. Some sets are unlocked simply by playing through the main story, while most others are earned as rewards through optional activities. You’ll typically receive armor after completing major side quests, but a few are more hidden and require careful exploration of the map.

Warning: Minor spoilers for Ghost of Yotei.

Each armor set in the game has unique abilities that allow you to focus on specific styles of play. For example, one set might make Atsu more deadly in close combat, while another boosts stealth skills. Besides these special traits, the armor sets don’t change your stats—meaning wearing certain armor won’t reduce damage from attacks. Collecting all 12 sets will earn you the “For All Occasions” trophy.

Every Armor Set You Get During the Main Story

Onryō Armor, Nine-Tail Armor, & Mercenary Attire

By following the main story in Ghost of Yotei, you automatically unlock three armor sets: the Onryō Armor, Nine-Tail Armor, and Mercenary Attire. Each one becomes available in different regions at key moments in the story progression.

Note: All images in this guide show basic color versions and fully upgraded armor. The effectiveness of each increases with the armor’s upgrade level. For example, enemies scared by the Onryō Armor will take more damage the more it’s upgraded.

Onryō Armor

This is Atsu’s default outfit when starting the game, minus the mask. It automatically upgrades as you progress and eliminate members of the Yotei Six. You can’t visit the armorer Ginji to upgrade it; instead, it improves gradually over the course of the story. This armor specializes in onryō playstyle, using Atsu’s abilities to terrify enemies.

Traits include:

  • Killing enemies with Spirit Attacks or thrown melee weapons may cause nearby enemies to become frightened.
  • A wolf might appear when enemies are scared.
  • Terrified enemies take increased damage.

Matching gear:

  • Helmet: Lone Wolf’s Straw Hat
  • Mask: Onryō Mask

Nine-Tail Armor

This set is earned when you go to Teshio Ridge to hunt down the Kitsune, a member of the Yotei Six. It’s focused on stealth, improving damage and effectiveness with quickfire weapons like Kunai and Smoke Bombs.

Traits include:

  • Boosts damage and duration of status effects from quickfire weapons.
  • Killing enemies might give you quickfire ammo.
  • Reduces enemy detection.

Matching gear:

  • Helmets: Nine Tail Acolyte Headband, Nine Tail Apprentice Headband, Nine Tail Master Hat
  • Masks: Nine Tail Acolyte Mask, Nine Tail Apprentice Mask, Nine Tail Master Mask

Mercenary Attire

You get this by searching for the Oni in Ishikari Plain. It’s well-rounded but favors melee combat and also increases Atsu’s sake consumption efficiency.

Traits include:

  • Thrown melee weapons deal more damage and generate Spirit.
  • Assassinating enemies might make them drop Sake.
  • Drinking Sake grants extra Spirit.

Matching gear:

  • Helmet: Old Straw Hat
  • Mask: Mercenary’s Mask

Dragonfly Armor

You can unlock this early in the game by finding Daijiro in Tokachi Range. Completing a short quest will reward you with it. Daijiro is found at a Traveler’s Rest in the northeast part of Tokachi Range, close to the Yotei Grasslands.

Traits include:

  • Drawing your bow creates a brief glint that empowers your shot.
  • Firing the empowered shot grants Concentration.
  • Increases arrow reload speed.

How to unlock: Help Daijiro during his quest involving rescuing him from bandits and bounties, then meet him at Huranui’s Rest to receive the armor.

Bounty Master Armor

This set is earned after completing a bounty in Yotei Grasslands, involving Soma the Condemned. The bounty involves tracking him to a cave west of Lake Jozan, where you play a song on your Shamisen by interacting with a special door. After defeating Soma in a duel, you receive the armor.

Traits include:

  • Increases the windows for Perfect Parry and Dodge, but regular parries are disabled.
  • A Perfect Parry can trigger counters.
  • Increases Spirit gains.

Robes For Sitturaynu: A Gift From the Ainu

This set is obtained by completing the story “The Heart of an Ainu.” It involves traveling to Nayoro Wilds, north of Tokachi Range, where you meet Huci, an Ainu woman. Exploring the area and collecting Ainu Items (bright glints) will allow you to upgrade the robes further.

Traits include:

  • Fireflies and controller vibrations guide you to important locations.
  • Golden Birds can lead you to songs, painting spots, or merchants.
  • Flowers may be automatically collected while riding or in stealth.

How to get: Find lost Ainu Items across Ezo using your Shamisen to play specific songs. Bring them back to Kaeka the Weaver in Husko Kotan to upgrade the robes.

Taro’s Armor

Collected from Taro the Scavenger, who is based at Dead Man’s Tree in Tokachi Range. You may also find him at your campsite after clearing enemy camps outside the main hub area.

Traits include:

  • Better Spirit gains if you have a cooking Spirit bonus.
  • Higher maximum health.
  • Reduced fire and cold damage.

How to unlock: Talk to Taro during your quest in Tokachi Range, or find him near campsites afterward. Easy to obtain, and useful for increasing health and resilience early in the game.

Armor of the Undying

Tied to the myth of “The Undying Samurai,” this armor can be acquired by exploring the Oshima Coast, where you hunt the legendary samurai. You listen to tales at the Storyteller’s Rest and find wind chimes across Ezo that guide you to a final duel.

Traits include:

  • When weapon aligned, staggering enemies restores health.
  • Increases window for Perfect Parry and Dodge.
  • Focus Attacks might do more stagger damage.

How to get: Find four wind chimes with special traits, follow the guiding wind, and defeat the Undying Samurai in a duel at the cliffside.

Spider Lily Armor

This set is found early in Tokachi Range by exploring the Abandoned Tominaga Estate behind the Mysterious Gate. Within, find four keys to a locked gate, which will eventually lead you to the armor.

Traits include:

  • Enemies may drop throwable weapons.
  • Increased stagger damage to enemies.
  • Stagger damage can affect nearby foes.

Useful for: A mostly onryō or defensive style but also effective for melee fights once upgraded due to area stagger effects.

Crimson Kimono

Collected by seeking three specific “Sun-Painted Trees” in the region, marked by bright orange leaves. Once located, following the fireflies will lead to a grave where you retrieve the kimono.

Traits include:

  • Chain assassinations with Kunai.
  • Reduced detection.
  • Ranged kusarigama assassinations from further away.

How to get: Find the trees in Sakuru Woods, Hakodake Mountains, and near Teshio River, then follow fireflies to complete the quest.

Ginji’s Guard Armor

Available after traveling to Oshima Coast to find Ginji, a recurring character. He’ll be in trouble with Saito’s forces, and your quest involves rescuing him in a straightforward boss fight. Once you help him, he will give you his guard armor set, which is good for defending against bullets and blocking gunfire.

Traits include:

  • Faster Tanegashima (flintlock) reload.
  • Blocking deflects bullets and grants Spirit.
  • Incoming projectiles cause less damage.

How to unlock: Find Ginji at Matsumae Residences, west of Matsumae Castle, and complete his quest.

Fundoshi

This is the last and least traditional armor in the game. It’s obtained by soaking in all 16 hot springs across Ezo, which can be found by playing the “Song of Well-Being” or spotting bright red trees over the springs. It offers some stealth benefits but makes you more prone to frostbite, lowering maximum health temporarily.

Traits include:

  • Allows running and sprinting silently, at the cost of warmth.

Note: While it’s more for fun and completing the “For All Occasions” trophy, it’s not particularly practical for combat.
