The game can become overwhelming after the opening segment of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 if you don’t have a clear plan for what to do next. Having a cheat sheet can simplify your progress, but initially, focus on honing your combat skills and securing a horse to set a strong foundation.
This guide highlights the top 8 beginner tips to help you navigate the expansive world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 without feeling lost.
1. Master Fast Traveling
The first essential is understanding fast travel, which enables quick movement between cities. When your map reveals the locations, a blue shield icon will appear over major cities, allowing you to fast travel by pressing M on your keyboard or the D-pad on your controller.
Pro Tip: Avoid using fast travel early on. Instead, invest in obtaining a horse named Pebbles and develop her special perk, Good Old Pebbles, which makes her one of the best horses in the game.
It’s important to monitor your health and hunger levels, especially since travel consumes stamina and you may encounter bandits along the way. Always ensure you’re well-rested, injury-free, and properly fed.
Troubleshooting Fast Travel Issues:
If fast travel isn’t working, untrack all points of interest on your map, including fast travel points. Adjust your map settings to toggle available destinations, or try reducing your carried weight as heavy loads can restrict travel options.
2. Craft Savior Schnapps
Saving your game can be done by sleeping in beds or reaching auto-save points during quests. Alternatively, consuming Savior Schnapps allows for manual saves.
Note: Don’t save too frequently at the start. Only Savior Schnapps can save your progress—regular saves won’t activate in this game.
You can find Savior Schnapps from traders or apothecaries, or craft it yourself at an Alchemy bench using Nettle (1) and Belladonna (2). Besides saving progress, this drink boosts your strength, agility, and vitality—although a weaker variant only enables saving.
3. Prioritize Rest and Sleep
Getting enough rest is crucial for maintaining your health. Use taverns or inns to sleep, or set up camp if you’re low on groschen (in-game currency). Tip: barter with the tavern-keeper for a room, which typically costs 120 groschen or less, unlocking a permanent bed with a shared chest.
Remember, sleeping in any bed doesn’t guarantee safety. You must sleep in owned beds to save the game effectively; sleeping in unowned beds may result in interruptions or failed saves.
4. Heal Your Injuries
Bandages can prevent bleeding but won’t heal injuries. For full recovery, you need to either sleep or use healing potions like Marigold Decoction.
Check your injury status in the Buffs section of your player menu to determine how to treat specific wounds.
5. Use Shrines to Your Advantage
Throughout KCD 2, you’ll find numerous shrines. To effectively utilize them, unlock the Fundamentals of Theology perk under the Scholarship skill tree at level 14. This allows you to pray at shrines, granting buffs that protect against fatal injuries and restore 25% of your health.
6. Improve Skills and Attributes
Open the skills menu to select and upgrade your abilities. The description of each skill explains how to level it up and the amount of XP needed for the next rank.
Another effective way to advance your skills is by reading books purchased from NPC vendors. Once acquired, they appear in your inventory. If you’ve fully read a book (95-100%), you can sell it back to vendors for a decent Groschen return.
7. Repair Equipment Regularly
Damaged armor and weapons see their stats decline over time. It’s essential to keep them repaired. To fix metal items, visit a blacksmith; for clothing and gear, see a tailor; for bows and crossbows, go to a carpenter; and for leather gear, visit a cobbler.
You can also repair items yourself with proper repair kits, which can be bought or found as loot. Additionally, melee weapons can sometimes be sharpened at the sharpening wheel.
8. Execute Stealth Kills and Knockouts Carefully
Sneaking behind enemies with a dagger equipped allows for silent assassinations or non-lethal knockouts. Timing is key—if you’re too slow or miss the window, the enemy may alert others.
To successfully eliminate an NPC, approach quietly from behind, press the button for assassination or knockout, then watch the center of your screen. A blue dagger icon indicates a successful attempt; immediately press your attack button to finalize the kill or choke.
Be mindful: if you’re too slow, a green shield icon will appear, and you’ll need to press the block button swiftly to prevent the target from escaping.
