In just a few weeks, director Danny Boyle will dive back into the horror genre with 28 Years Later, a sequel to his iconic 2002 zombie film, 28 Days Later. Fans are eagerly anticipating this release.
So is Boyle, who expressed his enthusiasm at CinemaCon 2025. "I’m still captivated by an apocalypse," he enthused on stage. "I enjoy taking out the infected and blowing things up. That’s how my agent puts it; it’s my best work."
With characters like Cillian Murphy’s Jim and Robert Carlyle’s Don taking a backseat for this installment, 28 Years Later will focus on an entirely new cast as they struggle to survive in a devastated Britain. The original film provided an intimate look at four Londoners trying to escape hordes of savage infected, while its action-oriented follow-up, 28 Weeks Later, showcased NATO and the U.S. military attempting to regain control as the infected faced starvation.
In a fresh narrative twist, 28 Years Later will follow a family—father, mother, and son—who become separated after their island refuge falls under siege. So far, we’ve only seen a teaser trailer that keeps the details of the plot largely under wraps, but it promises plenty of excitement.
Here’s a summary of everything we know about 28 Years Later, covering its release date, cast, and enticing tidbits from the creative team. We’ll also recap the events of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later for those needing a refresher before they immerse themselves in the franchise again. Read on for all the latest on 28 Years Later.
Release Date for 28 Years Later
28 Years Later is set to hit theaters on June 20. Interestingly, it was filmed alongside its sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, so we anticipate that this follow-up won’t be too far behind.
A third film is already in the works, with Boyle returning to conclude the trilogy. However, the title remains a mystery, as Boyle mentioned that Sony Pictures wants to evaluate how the first film performs before committing to a sequel.
"This story is quite ambitious," explained writer Alex Garland, who also penned the original film. "We aimed to condense it, but it naturally unfolds as a trilogy."
Producer Andrew Macdonald added, "Stories of this scale are rare in the UK. Pulling it off here is a significant achievement."
At CinemaCon, Boyle expressed his challenges in securing funding for the trilogy’s final chapter, calling on horror enthusiasts to support 28 Years Later and its sequel in theaters.
Trailer for 28 Years Later
The initial trailer for 28 Years Later premiered in December 2024. Despite its brief runtime of over two minutes, it remains cryptic. It begins with children watching Teletubbies in a rundown house, revealing, "It began 10,228 days ago. Days became weeks."
Subsequent scenes depict an isolated island, a creepy scarecrow, memorial crosses, and a young man guiding a horse and cart. The message progresses with phrases like "Weeks became years," showcasing community roles such as seamster, lookout, and councillor.
As characters navigate the heavily fortified gates of their island, the trailer takes a perilous turn, resembling later seasons of The Walking Dead. It portrays the survivors armed with bows and arrows confronting dangers across fields and abandoned areas.
As the teaser concludes, it poses the unsettling question: "Next summer, what will humanity become? 28 Years Later?"
Additional footage was shown privately at CinemaCon 2025, described by reports as beginning with military figures in a dark room encountering an infected individual.
Later scenes show characters on the island, highlighting the chaos as many infected appear. Voiceovers suggest dire circumstances, with messages like: "Many people dead… infected and non-infected alike."
Cast of 28 Years Later
Continuing the trend set by its predecessors, 28 Years Later features a compact yet powerful cast, including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes.
Comer plays a character named Isla, and Johnson takes on the role of her husband Jamie. Their son, Spike, is portrayed by Alfie Williams. Supporting roles come from actors like Jack O’Connell, Edvin Ryding, Emma Laird, and Erin Kellyman, though their specific characters haven’t been disclosed yet. Interestingly, art dealer turned actor Angus Neill will appear as an “Emaciated Man” infected by the Rage Virus.
While Cillian Murphy will not appear in 28 Years Later, he is expected to have a role in the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
Plot Summary for 28 Years Later
The film’s official synopsis reveals that it’s been nearly three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological lab. The survivors have formed a fragile existence on a small, heavily-defended island connected to the mainland. One member of this group embarks on a mission into the heart of the mainland, uncovering dangerous secrets and horrors that have not only affected the infected but other survivors as well.
The character embarking on this daring venture is likely Jamie, played by Johnson, according to clues in the trailer.
In the aftermath of 28 Weeks Later, we learned that the Rage Virus had spread across Europe. Yet, recent reports suggest that 28 Years Later implies that countries outside the UK are "relatively unaffected," leaving us curious about how this narrative will unfold. Boyle has indicated that the community on the island is closely knit, with stringent defense measures in place that have allowed them to survive for so long in such a hostile environment.
Recap of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later
Released in 2002, 28 Days Later draws inspiration from classic horror films like The Night of the Living Dead. It begins with activists freeing chimpanzees from a lab, unaware that these animals carry a highly contagious rage virus. After a series of disastrous events, a bike courier named Jim (Cillian Murphy) awakens a month later to find an abandoned London filled with infected individuals.
In 2007, 28 Weeks Later shows the aftermath of the virus, focusing on military control over a small section of Britain and how it affects the children of two survivors. The harrowing story unfolds as they discover the devastating truths and escalating chaos surrounding them.
For those wanting to dive back into the horror genre, this upcoming release promises to deliver an enthralling continuation of this iconic franchise.
