Here are some helpful tips to get you started on your stealth mission in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Since I hadn’t played the original version, I found that there were many things to learn along the way, but warnings about long cutscenes and stealth often set high expectations. Luckily, the game provides lots of useful info and even has an in-game tips menu for basic guidance, but there are still some things it doesn’t tell you. If this is your first time playing Snake Eater, keep these tips in mind.

1. Stealth isn’t as crucial as it seems.
Despite warnings about sneaking and getting caught, in Delta, being sneaky isn’t always a must. Of course, taking your time to scout enemy patrols and move carefully will make things easier, but trying to go loud isn’t as big a deal as you might think. Your alert status will drop back to normal eventually, whether you hide or avoid witnesses. Just be aware that if you’re careless, it will put you in more danger and may lead to a more aggressive playstyle later, which could use up more resources. Your final score may change based on your stealth, but don’t stress about it on your first run.

2. Using non-lethal methods on bosses can unlock better rewards.
Handling bosses without killing them can net you some of the best gear. Weapons like tranquilizers, including the cigarette gas spray, MK.22 pistol, and Mosin Nagant sniper rifle, slowly drain a boss’s stamina bar until they’re subdued without dying. For example, knocking out The End with a sniper shot, or holding him up, grants access to cool gear like the Mosin Nagant and exclusive camouflage uniforms. This approach also makes the game more resource-friendly and less risky.

3. Always attach suppressors to your weapons.
Suppressors are key to staying hidden. However, they wear out after each shot, so check the gauge above your ammo counter regularly. When they break, you need to go to the weapon menu (hold the D-Pad right and press X) to add or remove suppressors. You can also find spares scattered in the environment, so be thorough in your searches.

4. Save your game often and wisely.
While the game auto-saves frequently, it’s easy to forget the manual save option. To ensure you don’t lose progress, open the radio menu (hold D-Pad down) during critical moments like enemy bases, then select SAVE. Using the manual save feature lets you restart from a chosen point if things go wrong, which is especially useful during tough sections.

5. Stay fueled to keep stamina levels high.
Snake’s stamina is vital for health recovery and avoiding detection. Eating regularly—such as Calorie Mates or ramen—restores stamina, but be careful if you come back after a break; food stored in your backpack can spoil and won’t help you recover. Keep an eye out for wildlife or fruits to gather fresh supplies.

6. Don’t forget your gadgets.
Make good use of Snake’s tools, especially for stealth. Items like scopes, thermal goggles, motion sensors, and the camcorder can give you a big advantage when spotting enemies in new areas. Remember to look through your gadgets often and use every tool at your disposal.

7. Check your camouflage often and switch it out if it gets low.
Your camouflage index determines how well you blend into the environment. Press D-Pad up to check it frequently and switch outfits or face paint to stay concealed. Depending on your choices and the environment, some uniforms may help you stay hidden longer.

8. Heal injuries and illnesses immediately.
Getting shot, stabbed, or stung can slow you down and worsen over time. Use the Survival Viewer to heal injuries anytime without rushing, and consider eating food while healing to speed up recovery. Don’t ignore wounds—the game allows you to pause and fix them safely.

9. Loot storage sheds and blow them up if needed.
Enemy areas often have sheds with supplies and weapons. Search every building thoroughly to gather resources. If you find TNT or other explosives, use them to blow these places up afterward, disrupting guard patrols and reducing enemy efficiency.

10. Always loot the bodies.
If enemies are knocked out or dead, they usually carry useful items. When you clear an area, quickly gather all nearby bodies and then drop them; doing so can make them spit out ammo, grenades, or other gear you need. To save time, pick up bodies by their legs, which is faster.

Following these tips should help make your journey smoother and more successful. Good luck on the battlefield!
