Digital Phablet – Recently, the renowned Japanese animation studio Wit Studio faced criticism from Western audiences after allegations surfaced that it used AI-generated backgrounds in the opening sequence of the fourth season of Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke.
Wit Studio is celebrated for its work on the initial three seasons of Attack on Titan, Spy x Family, Ranking of Kings, and the first season of Vinland Saga. Known for its breathtaking animation quality and seamless motion, the studio has long enjoyed a stellar reputation among fans. However, shockwaves were felt when reports claimed that AI was integrated into their production process.
Many social media users shared screenshots from the opening of Ascendance of a Bookworm, which features the track “Pages” by Little Glee Monster, raising questions about the studio’s methodologies.
Allegations of AI Usage in Ascendance of a Bookworm Opening
A social media post commented, “It’s no surprise that Wit Studio might have used AI-generated backgrounds for Bookworm’s opening. They’ve shown a pro-AI stance before, but it’s disappointing to see them do this so brazenly, especially with such a talented artist like Nakazawa involved.”
Another user expressed, “WIT STUDIO, WHY THE F*** ARE YOU GUYS USING AI-GENERATED BACKGROUNDS FOR THE OPENING OF ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM S4?!!!!”
Some pointed out that the real concern isn’t solely Wit Studio but also the outsourcing firm Nam Hai Art, which reportedly has a reputation for incorporating AI into their work.
In addition, rumors have circulated that many animation studios might be secretly adopting AI tools in their production workflows.
For instance, the Chief Animation Director for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 revealed on Bluesky that “Several studios are already integrating generative AI into their processes discreetly.”
She further explained, “Many companies develop storyboards mimicking the style of specific creators and utilize AI to produce rough drafts for direction adjustments. Even if companies like Aniplex claim they won’t use AI, can the studios actually refuse if their clients are paying for it? They’re investing in tech companies, after all.”
She continued, “Aniplex itself develops AI to produce more anime! They’re a manufacturer, not a creative studio. So, their protests lack credibility. They probably don’t fully understand how production committees operate.”
