Digital Phablet – The Turkish TV series Uzak Şehir (Distant City), starring Sinem Ünsal and Ozan Akbaba, has been setting viewership records since its debut. However, it recently sparked significant debate on social media following the release of a new episode.
In last Monday’s 45th episode, scenes depicted the Albora family enjoying themselves at a venue. This portrayal led to viewer outrage, primarily over the depiction of a child present at a rakı (Turkish aniseed spirit) table, where alcohol is served. Additionally, Turkish child actor Kuzey Gezer, who portrays Deniz Cihan Albora, was featured singing in the episode, drawing considerable criticism.
Compounding the controversy, actress Ilkay Kayku Atalay, who plays Fidan Albora and wears a headscarf in the series, was seen consuming alcohol on-screen. Many viewers found these scenes “shocking” and “inappropriate,” with some calling for the series to be halted. Critics argued that the scenes violated Turkish societal norms, challenging traditional values.
A social media post on X highlighted the growing backlash, stating: “This scene in Uzak Şehir, which undermines Turkish societal values yet continues to break rating records, has drawn widespread responses online.” Others expressed concern that the series could influence public morals negatively.
The cast of Uzak Şehir includes:
1. Sinem Ünsal — playing Alya Albora
2. Ozan Akbaba — playing Cihan Albora
3. Sahra Şaş — playing Nare Albora Bulut
4. Burç Kümbetlioğlu — playing Boran Albora
5. Atakan Özkaya — playing Kaya Albora

There is also ongoing discussion about whether the series will continue its broadcast given the current controversy. Many describe the recent scenes as “shocking” and “inappropriate,” with social media comments reflecting concern over the series undermining Turkish cultural values despite its popularity.
