Sydney Sweeney is currently obsessed with wearing blue jeans. The 27-year-old actress shared several Instagram photos on Friday, August 15, showcasing moments spent with friends and family. In these pictures, she is dressed casually in jeans and a white T-shirt. This comes three weeks after her controversial advertisement for American Eagle jeans was released.
Her friends, who also attended the outing, all opted for blue or denim clothing, making denim the theme color of the evening. One photo captures her singing karaoke with a friend, while another shows her enjoying drinks with a group. She captioned the post “Duval Diaries.”
Sweeney expressed that she felt “perfect” when American Eagle approached her to be the face of their new denim campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” She shared, “I enjoy wearing sweats,” but added that trying on American Eagle jeans while flying yesterday made her realize how comfortable they are. She said, “They’re so comfortable, which makes my job even better.”
When asked about the campaign, she said, “I was thrilled when they suggested a denim campaign. I thought, ‘This is it.’ This is my chance. I can make this happen. You have no idea.”
American Eagle’s social media channels feature videos of Sweeney working on a car while dressed in various denim styles. She also appears testing new pieces and speaking directly to viewers about the collection.
Some viewers criticized the use of the word “jeans” as a pun on “genes,” claiming it was racist and implying a genetic superiority. Others found fault with the campaign’s focus on men’s fashion and its resemblance to the famous Brooke Shields denim ad from the 1980s.
Despite the backlash, American Eagle issued a statement on Instagram on Friday, August 1, announcing plans to intensify their promotional activities.
The brand emphasized that “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ has always centered around the jeans themselves,” stating, “Her pants. Her story. We will continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans confidently in their own unique way because great jeans make everyone look good.”
