The upcoming film, titled “The Housemaid’s Secret,” is the sequel to last year’s blockbuster and is scheduled for release in theaters on December 17, 2027. This marks exactly two years since the debut of “The Housemaid,” which was a massive success, grossing nearly $400 million globally against a $35 million production budget. Although it only earned $19 million during its opening weekend, it remained popular throughout the holiday season.
According to a tweet from Film Updates, the stars of the new film will include Sydney Sweeney, Kirsten Dunst, and Michele Morrone. The studio behind the film is positioning it as counterprogramming during the bustling Christmas season, launching alongside major releases like “Avengers: Secret Wars” and “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” which are both geared towards male audiences.
Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone reprise their roles from the first movie, and Kirsten Dunst will also appear. The story, adapted from Freida McFadden’s best-selling novel series, follows Millie (played by Sweeney), who was initially hired as a live-in maid for a wealthy family harboring a dark secret. In the sequel, her role shifts to managing a house for a woman she’s never met—only to uncover truths behind a locked door that could reveal secrets darker than her own past.
Filming for “The Housemaid’s Secret” is set to begin later this year. Paul Feig returns to direct, working alongside writer Rebecca Sonnenshine, who based the script on the original book. The film is produced by Fifty-Fifty Films, with key collaborators including Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures and Laura Fischer of Pretty Dangerous, alongside Sweeney herself.
Lionsgate is eager to expand “The Housemaid” into a major film franchise and has plans to adapt more of McFadden’s works in the future. A third book, titled “The Housemaid Is Watching,” is also in the pipeline.
This period piece promises to be Sweeney’s most captivating role yet, as she immerses herself in the intricate story of secrets and suspense.
Late this year, production will commence on “The Housemaid’s Secret.” Once completed, it is expected to be a prominent addition to the 2027 holiday lineup, with stars Sydney Sweeney and Kirsten Dunst returning for the sequel. The project, managed by Lionsgate, aims to establish “The Housemaid” as a lasting film series, with additional novels by McFadden potentially adapted in future installments.
