Digital Phablet – A study from 2019 has recently gained renewed attention on social media, highlighting that Skrillex’s track, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,” may serve as an effective mosquito repellent. The research indicated that listening to this popular Dubstep song can notably decrease the number of mosquito bites.
The findings published in Acta Tropica in June 2019 demonstrated that Dubstep influences female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, commonly known as yellow fever mosquitoes. When exposed to “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” for 10 minutes, these mosquitoes hesitated longer before attacking hosts and visited them fewer times.
Researchers selected this track specifically for its range of low and high frequencies, which appeared to greatly impact the mosquitoes’ behavior.

According to the BBC, the researcher explained, “In insects, low-frequency vibrations promote mating behaviors, while noise interferes with their ability to perceive signals from each other and from hosts.”
Researchers added, “The fact that such music can delay host attack, decrease blood feeding, and interfere with mating offers promising new approaches for developing music-based personal protection and control strategies against Aedes-borne diseases.”
Acta Tropica also noted that the mosquitoes’ sexual activity diminished as a result of the music, suggesting that female mosquitoes appeared to find it “entertaining.”
A social media user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “Imagine mosquitoes evolving to dislike EDM, bet they’re huge Swifties though.”
Another user added, “Really? I’m playing that on repeat all summer long.”
