Digital Phablet – The ongoing feud between Stephen Colbert and President Trump shows no signs of ending, even after The Late Show’s recent Emmy win.
At the 2025 Emmy Awards held on Sunday, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert clinched the best talk show category for the first time, surpassing competitors like Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Daily Show.
Excited to display his golden statuette to the live audience, Colbert joked during his first appearance following the awards ceremony on Tuesday, “We should have been canceled years ago.” CBS announced in July that The Late Show would conclude in May 2026, which appeared to be the direction the show was heading.
Following the achievement, Colbert joked that the award belonged to the 200 dedicated team members who produce the show—especially the writers, who meticulously prepare the script for every episode, including his on-stage monologues. “Every day, they jot down everything I say so everyone can take a script home. It’s incredible how they do it daily,” he said.
But Colbert emphasized that the team’s effort extends beyond just the writers. It encompasses everyone involved—those working behind the scenes in production, acting, editing, band members, the control room staff, props, graphic designers, researchers, digital professionals, accountants, legal team, wardrobe, makeup artisans, security personnel, maintenance staff, assistants, interns, and, importantly, the audience. “All of you—everyone who comes through those doors—are what makes this show possible. And I want to acknowledge that, but I’ll keep the speech short,” he said.
He then lightheartedly joked that he’d “jab your eyes out with the wings right there” if anyone tried to touch his Emmy.
Colbert also expressed gratitude to the Television Academy for voting for him, his colleagues at the show, and his fellow nominees, Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel.
To cap off his acceptance speech, Colbert made a teasing reference to his long-time adversary, saying, “Speaking of Emmys, Donald Trump doesn’t have one.”
It was an unexpected moment of triumph for Colbert and his team, especially considering the show had previously been canceled, and Trump was quick to boast about the news in July. At that time, Trump posted on Truth Social, “I absolutely love that Stephen Colbert got fired,” claiming that his talent was even worse than his ratings and predicting that Jimmy Kimmel would be next, stating, “He has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld from Fox News is better than all of them combined, including that fool on NBC who ruined the once-great Tonight Show.”
While Trump hasn’t secured an Emmy himself, he was nominated twice—once in 2004 and again in 2005—for The Apprentice, competing for best reality competition show.
