Los Angeles: Ryan Gosling is set to star in an upcoming installment of the "Star Wars" franchise, titled "Star Wars: Starfighter," with Shawn Levy taking the helm as director.
Lucasfilm has officially confirmed the project’s details, revealing that production will kick off in the fall. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027, according to reports from Variety.
During an announcement at the annual Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni introduced "Starfighter" to eager fans.
Variety also noted that Jonathan Tropper has penned the screenplay for the film. Tropper has previously collaborated with Levy and is recognized as the creator of the Apple TV+ series "Your Friends & Neighbors."
Gosling and Levy made an appearance during the live-streamed event to provide additional hints about "Starfighter." Gosling sported a cap featuring the phrase, “Never tell me the odds.”
Expressing his excitement, Gosling commented, “Being here with all of you is inspiring. There’s such a wealth of creativity and love in this room, reminding us of how much movies, especially these stories, mean to us.” He added, “The force is a mysterious thing, but right now, the force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.’”
In response, Levy shared, “We’re fans too. There’s a deep connection between these stories and the audience because we’ve spent our lives as part of that audience. We understand how significant these narratives are.”
"Starfighter" is set to introduce new characters within the “Star Wars” universe and takes place approximately five years after the conclusion of “Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker,” which wrapped up the Skywalker saga and currently stands as the latest entry in the series’ timeline. No other casting information has been disclosed at this time.
Gosling was last seen in the action-packed romantic comedy “The Fall Guy,” which premiered in May 2024. "Starfighter" represents an exciting shift for the actor, who typically avoids franchise roles.
This new film will release just over a year after the next theatrical "Star Wars" feature, "The Mandalorian & Grogu," marking the first major "Star Wars" release since "The Rise of Skywalker" in December 2019.
