Sean Combs, aged 55, was sentenced to 50 months in federal prison on Friday. He was convicted in July on two counts of transportation for prostitution but was acquitted of the more severe charges of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy.

Judge Arun Subramanian emphasized the need for a stern sentence to “send a message to both offenders and victims that exploitation and violence against women will be met with real accountability.” This decision followed a lengthy hearing, during which Combs addressed the court for the first time during the trial.

After hearing arguments from federal prosecutors, Combs’ defense team, and the artist himself, Judge Subramanian rendered his decision. The defense attorneys argued that their client deserved no more than 14 months behind bars. Since Combs had already served substantial time, he is expected to be released by year’s end. Conversely, federal prosecutors urged an incarceration of at least 11 years and 3 months.

Ever since his arrest in September, Combs has been detained at a Brooklyn jail. His trial, spanning eight weeks and culminating in the sentencing, was marked by emotional testimonies, celebrity appearances, and a court packed with fans, social media figures, and members of the press. Federal prosecutors compiled a complex case over six weeks, alleging that Combs operated a criminal organization involved in concealing sex crimes over decades. Key witnesses, singer Cassie Ventura and a woman using the alias “Jane,” claimed Combs set them up on dates and coerced them into drug-fueled sex marathons with male escorts repeatedly.

Throughout his trial, the defense highlighted text message exchanges indicating that Ventura and Jane appeared to agree on their meetings and helped plan them, attempting to weaken the women’s credibility. The prosecution presented over twenty witnesses, including former employees, federal agents, and acquaintances of the alleged victims. The defense rested quickly, without presenting witnesses, and ultimately, Combs was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges but found guilty of transporting Jane and Ventura across state lines for commercial sex.

Although acquitted of the most serious allegations, there is acknowledgment that Combs caused harm. A pivotal piece of evidence was a 2016 video showing Combs hitting Ventura in a hotel corridor. His lawyers admitted that Combs has a history of domestic violence, though it wasn’t part of the current charges.

During Friday’s hearing, prosecutors argued that Combs’ aggressive past behaviors warranted a longer sentence, citing his history as evidence of ongoing issues.

The trial had emotional moments, celebrity presence, and extensive media coverage. The government’s case painted a picture of a criminal enterprise involved in long-term sex crimes, with main witnesses including singer Cassie Ventura and an unidentified woman named “Jane,” who testified about being coerced into drug-fueled sex sessions.

Despite the guilty verdict for transportation, the defense’s use of text messages aimed to discredit the witnesses’ testimonies, indicating possible premeditation and agreement. The court ultimately found Combs not guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering but guilty of crossing state lines to engage in commercial sex.

While not convicted of the most serious offenses, the case highlighted underlying issues of violence and harm, with video footage and past behavior indicating a troubling pattern. Prosecutors argued that these factors justify an extended prison term.
