Digital Phablet – Well-known American singer and songwriter Sabrina Carpenter recently found herself at the center of controversy on social media following accusations of “racism” towards an Arab fan during her piano performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival held in Indio, California.
As she prepared to perform on the piano, she heard a “zaghrouta,” a traditional Arabic ululation commonly used in celebrations such as weddings and parties throughout the Middle East. When the fan performed the “zaghrouta,” Sabrina responded with, “Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it…” The fan explained, “It’s part of my culture,” prompting Sabrina to reply, “Your culture is yodeling?” and then dismissively called it odd.
Footage capturing the exchange quickly circulated on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), with many users criticizing Sabrina Carpenter, labeling her as “racist” and insensitive toward other cultures.

In response to the mounting criticism, Sabrina took to X to clarify her stance, writing, “My apologies, I didn’t perceive this person clearly and couldn’t hear well. My reaction was simply confusion and sarcasm, with no ill intent. I could have handled it better! Now I understand what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from now on.”
Some commenters pointed out that her reaction seemed deliberate, with one remarking, “You obviously heard them and then said, ‘Is this your culture?’ with that disgusted look… if there hadn’t been such an uproar, you wouldn’t have issued an apology.”
This incident followed a tweet from a social media user named “Poppy,” who wrote, “Sabrina saying she doesn’t like an Arabic cultural cheer… this is so insensitive and Islamophobic. I am very disappointed in her.”
Another individual expressed, “I’m utterly shocked. I used to be a huge Sabrina Carpenter fan, and now she’s mocking my culture and calling me ‘weird.’ This is racist, inappropriate, and made me uncomfortable. This white blonde woman should be canceled.”
Despite her explanation, critics continue to view the incident as problematic, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding cultural expressions and the importance of respectful interactions.
