A Legacy Renewed: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Years after his death, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan continues to be a monumental figure in the world of music. His album, Chain of Light, is a collection of four previously unreleased tracks from 1990, showcasing his timeless artistry. The album includes electrifying performances of qawwali classics like Ya Allah Ya Rehman and the unheard Ya Gaus Ya Meeran.

The latter piece, a nine-minute spiritual journey, illustrates Nusrat’s extraordinary talent in blending complex rhythms with soaring vocal improvisations, creating a truly moving experience. The Guardian praised the album as “a noteworthy find that solidifies Khan’s reputation as one of music’s great voices.” These recordings were made during a crucial time when Nusrat was on the verge of global recognition, making this album both a tribute and a showcase of his lasting brilliance.

Arooj Aftab: Carrying the Torch

Adding to Pakistan’s musical achievements, Arooj Aftab’s Night Reign has secured the sixth position on this esteemed list. Known for her unique ability to combine classical South Asian music with contemporary minimalism, Aftab’s album is a heartfelt exploration of love, loss, and the enchanting aspects of the night.

Embracing Musical Diversity

The Guardian’s Top 10 list highlights creativity and artistic expression from various corners of the world. In addition to Nusrat and Arooj, the list features a wide range of works, from Mongolian vocal artistry to lo-fi Filipino dance beats, reflecting the vibrancy of global music in 2024.

The full list includes:

  • Poeji – Nant
  • DJ Love – Budots World (Reloaded)
  • Ganavya – Daughter of a Temple
