Digital Phablet – Famed Egyptian football star and Liverpool player, Mohamed Salah, has publicly criticized UEFA over its recent post concerning the death of “Palestinian Pele,” Suleiman Obeid, who was recently shot and killed by Israeli forces.
At just 41 years old, Obeid was fatally shot on August 6 by Israeli forces while awaiting humanitarian aid amid the ongoing famine in Gaza, which has resulted in over 217 Palestinian deaths, including 100 children.
The killing of Obeid ignited widespread outrage among human rights advocates and pro-Palestine supporters, who took to social media to express their condolences to his family.
According to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), since October 7, 2023, a total of 325 members of its community—including players, coaches, managers, referees, and other staff—have been killed by Israeli forces, as reported by CNN.
Mohamed Salah Criticizes UEFA’s Post about ‘Palestinian Pele’s’ Death
On social media platform X, UEFA posted a tribute saying, “Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the ‘Palestinian Pele.’ A talent who inspired hope in countless children, even during the darkest times,” without mentioning the circumstances of his death.
In response, Salah questioned, “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?” His comment received over a million likes and more than 78 million views. As of now, UEFA has not issued any statement addressing the controversy, while many pro-Palestine supporters have called for Israel’s expulsion from the federation.
A pro-Palestine user on the same platform added, “MENTION HIS DEATH CAUSE TOO! The one who killed him is Israel, and it’s a shame you didn’t specify that.” They further stated, “Why is Israel still in UEFA? They are child killers, terrorists, and criminals. Russia was banned for much less, at less than 0.1% of this. Remove Israel from UEFA. Free Palestine.”
