Digital Phablet – Jimmy Kimmel Obtains Italian Citizenship Amidst Political Tensions
Should Jimmy Kimmel consider leaving the United States while Donald Trump is in office? Probably not, since he hosts ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” but by acquiring Italian citizenship this year, he’s preparing a backup plan if needed. Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres relocated abroad last fall after Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the presidential race. A source told The Daily Beast that Kimmel mentioned on “The Sarah Silverman Podcast” that he might do the same.
The comedian revealed that he became an Italian citizen while discussing how some people are contemplating leaving the country to escape the influence of President Donald Trump.
When Kimmel appeared on Sarah Silverman’s show last Friday, they discussed the political climate during Trump’s second term. During that conversation, Kimmel shared the news.
“Many friends of mine are considering where they should seek citizenship,” Silverman said.
“I’ve obtained Italian citizenship,” Kimmel replied.
“You’ve done what? That’s incredible,” Silverman responded.
“I have that now. And honestly, as bad as you might think things are, they’re actually much worse. It’s genuinely unbelievable,” Kimmel explained.
“I feel like it’s worse than even he would want it to be,” he added.
Fox News Digital inquired with the White House for a comment but did not receive an immediate response.
Throughout the 2024 election cycle, Kimmel has consistently supported Democratic candidates and has been a vocal critic of Trump for years.
According to Italian news agency Ansa, Kimmel first announced his Italian heritage at an event held in June at the Italian Consulate in Los Angeles.
He told the crowd during the 79th Italian Republic Day celebration, “Thanks to my beloved grandmother Edith, whose family hails from Candida in the province of Avellino, I am now an Italian citizen.”
Earlier this year, Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres declared their plans to move abroad permanently after the 2024 election, which prompted Kimmel’s own admission.
Last week, Trump suggested that Kimmel’s show might be next in line for cancellation. This follows Stephen Colbert, another late-night host critical of Trump, who announced that his show would end in May 2026.
