Digital Phablet – Recently, U.S. comedian and actor Jerry Seinfeld drew significant criticism on social media after he equated the “Free Palestine” movement with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) during a surprise appearance at Duke University in North Carolina.
The event at Duke was unplanned and featured Seinfeld, who introduced former Israeli hostage Omer Shem Tov in honor of the Nova music festival held on October 7, 2023. As reported by NBC News, Seinfeld apparently began his speech by mentioning the Free Palestine movement and commented, “Just say you don’t like Jews.”
According to The Duke Chronicle, the university’s newspaper, Seinfeld further expressed, “When you say ‘Free Palestine,’ you’re not genuinely revealing what you truly believe. In fact, compared to the Klan, I think the Klan might be slightly better because they openly state, ‘We don’t like Blacks, we don’t like Jews.’ That’s honesty.”
Seinfeld Compares ‘Free Palestine’ to the KKK
In a tweet, The Hollywood Reporter shared a clip where Seinfeld stated:
“Just say you don’t like Jews. By saying ‘Free Palestine,’ you’re not admitting what you really think. So it’s actually — compared to the Ku Klux Klan, I believe the Klan is actually a little better…” view tweet
His comments sparked outrage among pro-Palestinian advocates and human rights defenders. A user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked, “Your periodic reminder that Jerry Seinfeld is an awful human being.”
Shaun King, a well-known writer and activist, added, “What @JerrySeinfeld is implying is that oppressing Palestinians has become so ingrained in Jewish identity that just uttering ‘Free Palestine’ necessarily equates to hatred of Jews, and he claims it’s worse than the KKK. This man should never work again.”
Seinfeld has been a vocal supporter of Israel and has publicly expressed his pro-Israel stance on multiple platforms. During the same university event, he recalled visiting Tel Aviv and meeting with families of Israeli hostages, calling for urgent action.
Since October 7, 2023, ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza have resulted in over 64,000 Palestinians killed and around 163,000 injured. Moreover, Gaza’s health ministry reports that more than 399 Palestinians, including 140 children, have died due to starvation since the conflict escalated.
