A wave of outrage was recently sparked on social media after reports revealed that Israeli authorities arrested Hamdan Bilal, a Palestinian activist and director who worked on the Oscar-winning film No Other Land. According to the Israeli website Yior Azul, Hamdan was arrested on suspicion of throwing stones at Israeli settlers in the West Bank. The arrest follows the killing of Palestinian activist and teacher Zeid Halalin, who was shot by an Israeli settler in Masafer Yatta.
Zaid Halalin, who helped document Israeli attacks on Palestinians living in Masafer Yatta, was killed during a settler attack on the village of Umm al-Hiran, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Education.
According to the report, violent clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli settlers, forcing local police to intervene and arrest a number of parties, including Hamdan. The clashes resulted in the damage of several cars in the area.
In March 2025, Hamdan Bilal was violently attacked inside his home in Masafer Yatta, where he was hospitalized with head and abdominal injuries. Prior to his transfer, Israeli forces attempted to arrest him, but he was later released.
The incident sparked widespread outrage from pro-Palestinian and human rights activists, calling for the protection of the Palestinian population in the West Bank and expressing fears of future escalation of violence.
