Los Angeles: Recent developments have shed light on the expensive legal resolution between pop superstar Britney Spears and her father, Jamie Spears.
Last year, Britney reached a legal agreement with her father regarding issues tied to her conservatorship, as reported by ‘People’ magazine.
In November 2021, a judge in Los Angeles County officially ended Britney’s conservatorship, which had been in place for 13 years and had allowed her estranged father Jamie to manage her personal and financial matters. Britney’s former lawyer, Matthew S. Rosengart, strongly opposed the idea of her covering her father’s legal expenses during this time.
According to documents obtained by ‘People,’ filed by Rosengart on January 14, 2022, Jamie allegedly compensated himself over $6 million during the course of the conservatorship, engaged in surveillance of Britney, and committed financial misconduct in his role as conservator. Jamie has refuted all allegations of misconduct. The pop sensation, now 43, and her father, 72, reached a settlement on April 25, 2024.
No details regarding the settlement terms were made public in the filings submitted to the Los Angeles Superior Court the previous year, though the agreement was officially established on February 24, 2024.
As reported by ‘People,’ Britney has opted to cover her father’s unpaid legal bills, amounting to $2.12 million. This includes $500,000 to the Saul Ewing firm, which was deposited into the firm’s U.S. Bank account (signed off by Hal Morris, the firm’s general counsel), and $1.62 million to Willkie Farr & Gallagher, transferred to their Citibank account with partner Alex M. Weingarten’s signature.
She was given a 60-day timeframe to settle both payments fully, or she would incur additional court fees and interest even after the judgment. Jamie’s previous attorneys, Vivian L. Thoreen from Holland & Knight, did not receive any further compensation.
Britney successfully paid both legal fees in their entirety within the stipulated 60 days, meeting the conditions outlined in the settlement.
The individuals involved in this contract—Britney and her father—acknowledged that the payments settled all disputes related to the conservatorship proceedings. They collectively affirmed in the agreement that none of the parties admitted to any factual disputes, claims, or wrongdoing. The agreement was created with the mutual involvement of all counsel, and the right to appeal was waived by all parties.
