Digital Phablet – Renowned Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani, who also led the luxury lifestyle industry, passed away Thursday at the age of 91, peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
“With profound sadness, the Armani Group announces the passing of its founder, creator, and relentless visionary: Giorgio Armani,” they issued in a statement.
Giorgio Armani is widely regarded as one of the most influential designers of our era. He launched his fashion label in Milan in 1975, swiftly establishing himself as a leader in the industry and dressing numerous celebrities.
The company mentioned that his funeral will be private; however, those wishing to pay their respects can visit a funeral home in Milan, which will be open on Saturday and Sunday for this purpose.
“Mr. Armani, as he was always respectfully and affectionately called by employees and colleagues, departed peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones,” the statement added.
“He was tireless until the very end, working diligently on his company, collections, and numerous ongoing and upcoming projects,” it continued.
Due to illness, Armani had to cancel this year’s fashion show in Milan and also missed the Paris Armani Privé presentation upon his physician’s advice.
In July, he shared with AFP, “After 20 years of Armani Privé, this is the first time I’ve missed Paris.”
“My doctors recommended more rest, even though I felt prepared,” he explained.
Besides that, he stated, “I observed and approved every detail of the show from afar,” ensuring everyone was aligned with his vision.
He was credited with designing red carpet fashion and creating more affordable clothing lines for younger audiences through Emporio Armani, in addition to launching luxury hotels.
His passing occurred just weeks ahead of a celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of his own record label.
Italy’s Culture Minister, Alessandro Giuli, honored him as “a pivotal figure in Italian culture, who transformed elegance into a universal language.”
“His subtle yet innovative style reshaped the interplay between fashion, film, and society, leaving an enduring mark on contemporary culture,” Giuli remarked.
“He was not only a fashion master but also an ambassador of Italian identity globally.”
