Emma Thompson recounts a startling on-set encounter where Donald Trump unexpectedly pursued her. The actress, who is this year’s guest of honor at the Locarno Film Festival, shared a bizarre story earlier today about a strange encounter with the 47th U.S. president.
During a live Q&A about her role in the 1998 film Primary Colors, Thompson recalled being in her dressing room when her phone suddenly rang.
“Trump was there,” she said. “Hello, this is Donald Trump,” he announced. “Can I help you?” she responded, initially thinking it was a joke. She jokingly added, “Maybe he needed help finding his way.”
Thompson continued, “Then he said, ‘I’d love for you to come stay at one of my beautiful places.’ Maybe we could have dinner together. I told him, ‘That’s really nice. Thanks a lot. I’ll get back to you.’”
Imitating Trump’s distinctive voice, Thompson explained she was initially confused about how he got her number and why he was calling her. But she soon realized what was happening.
She said, “That day, I knew my divorce decree had just been sent. And I was pretty sure he had people looking for attractive women to pair with. He was seeking a kind divorcee, I suppose. Plus, he somehow found my number in my trailer. That’s stalking, you know.”
Thompson also joked, “I could have gone on a date with Trump and had some interesting stories to tell. I was empowered to change the course of American history.”
At another point during the discussion, she talked about her work in films like Richard Curtis’s Love Actually. Thompson admitted she was often surprised by the film’s enduring popularity, describing it as “weird but wonderful.” She explained that her character’s emotional scene—where she discovers her partner has been unfaithful—resonated because it touches on universal heartbreak, especially for women who often hide their feelings.
When asked about her involvement in the Harry Potter series, Thompson was less enthusiastic. She remarked, “That’s not really a significant part of my creative career. Honestly, I just came in, wore glasses and lots of hair, got paid well, and then left,” which drew laughs from the crowd.
Thompson was awarded the Leopard Club Award last night in Locarno for her contributions over the years, with the festival continuing until August 16.
