Cardi B is gearing up to ask her fans, “Am I the Drama?” in her upcoming album. While weeks have passed, some who have followed her court case seem to have already formed opinions.
The Grammy-winning rapper, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, testified in a Los Angeles court this past Wednesday regarding an alleged incident involving Emani Ellis, a former security guard.
According to legal documents reviewed by NBC News and Today.com, Ellis filed a lawsuit claiming Cardi B struck her in a Beverly Hills obstetrician’s office corridor in 2018. Cardi B denies the allegations.

This high-profile case has attracted significant online attention and inspired numerous memes. Many compare it to Gwyneth Paltrow’s 2023 ski collision trial, which drew similar reactions.
Fans have jokingly commented on her candid responses and facial expressions during cross-examination, sharing clips across X, TikTok, and Instagram. One viral clip features a caption saying, “Cardi B in court today was like an SNL skit,” which had been viewed over 7.2 million times by Thursday afternoon.

A representative from Cardi B’s team did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday.
Aymar Jean Christian, a communications professor at Northwestern University, explained that many online viewers find Cardi B’s openness appealing.
“In highly formal settings, people expect a show of demureness, a suppression of one’s more vibrant traits,” Christian said.
“Instead, Cardi B is seen being bold, witty, and sometimes flippant, which resonates with many. Her authenticity is what makes her a star,” he added.
During Monday’s court session, Ellis testified that Cardi B hit her in the head, face, and body, spat on her, and hurled racial slurs at her. Ellis claims Cardi B used her fame to influence her firing. The lawsuit notes that Ellis received psychological and medical treatment following the incident, and she seeks compensation for medical expenses, emotional distress, and lost wages.
Cardi B has maintained that she did not hit or spit on Ellis.
Despite the serious allegations, many online found her courtroom statements humorous. She explained she wasn’t disclosing her pregnancy at the time of the incident and claimed Ellis followed her to the fifth-floor doctor’s office.
When asked if she was angry with Ellis that day, Cardi B responded, “Yes, I was angry! Because I am pregnant! This girl is about to beat me up!”
She was also asked if she was disabled during the event, to which she replied, “When I’m pregnant, I’m very disabled. Do you want me to tell you what I can’t do?” Her answer elicited laughter in court, as clips shared widely show.
Famous meme influencer Saint Hoax, with 3.4 million Instagram followers, captioned a post about the trial, “This is Cardi at her Cardi-est.” Culture critic Evan Ross Katz, with 427,000 followers, joked that he would have been ejected from the courtroom for laughing during Cardi B’s testimony.
Cardi B described Ellis as someone with “security heavy” and “someone who looks like she can protect a building.”
Online commentary also highlighted her changing wigs, with some humorously noting how she confused a lawyer when shifting from a short black wig to a long blonde one. Videos from the trial show the lawyer asking, “Which one is your real hair? Are they both real?” to which Cardi B replied, “They’re wigs.”
The case has occasionally turned tense. In a clip shown on X, Ellis’s lawyer asked Cardi B to recall her words from 2018, leading Cardi B to repeat her earlier insults. Her lawyer then urged her to say those words to Ellis’s face.

Her lawyer, Peter J. Anderson, called for civility, prompting the judge to advise everyone to “cool things down” and to focus on genuine questions.
Legal analyst Biblical, a Northwestern professor, suggests this trial may attract more public attention ahead of Cardi B’s new album release on September 19.
“She seems aware of the cameras and appears to be leveraging this moment to connect with her audience,” Biblical said.
The trial is expected to continue through next week, following the Labor Day holiday.
