Digital Phablet – As Arc Raiders continues to grow in popularity, surpassing expectations and attracting a substantial player base, Embark Studios’ well-known extraction shooter is drawing some criticism for its use of AI-generated content within the game.
Known as one of the most approachable extraction shooters available today, thanks to its welcoming community and multi-platform support, Arc Raiders quickly climbed the charts. The game has attracted over 400,000 simultaneous players on Steam alone and has received favorable reviews from both players and critics alike.
However, Embark Studios, the developer behind Arc Raiders, is facing backlash from fans and a particular game review outlet because of its implementation of AI voices in the game. Eurogamer rated the game 2 out of 5, criticizing the use of generative AI as the primary reason.
Arc Raiders faces criticism over AI-generated content
It’s noteworthy that this isn’t the first instance of Embark Studios integrating generative AI into their titles. The Finals, a free-to-play first-person shooter developed by Embark, also employs generative AI technology for voice acting.
According to Games Radar, Stefan Strandberg, Embark’s Chief Commercial Officer, has clarified in multiple interviews that they did not fully utilize generative AI, stating that AI’s role was limited to text-to-speech functionalities.

The controversy has even ignited discussions among players on platforms like Reddit. Many community members expressed their opinions, with some questioning the necessity of AI voices. One user commented, “I really enjoy Arc Raiders, but I just don’t understand why they decided to add AI voices. It feels completely unnecessary.”
Another participant wrote, “My favorite moments are when I interact with other players—whether they’re role-playing as merchants or leading others with flutes. These genuine human interactions are what make the game special, and the use of inhuman AI voices somewhat ruins that authenticity.”
Conversely, some individuals pointed out that opinions are often biased, with one Reddit user stating, “People tend to seek out reviews that match their feelings. When they encounter a differing opinion, they get irritated. It’s normal to disagree, but respect others’ viewpoints.”
Despite some disagreements, Arc Raiders continues to enjoy strong popularity among multiplayer enthusiasts. Its engaging gameplay, combined with unique features that set it apart from other extraction shooters, sustains its large player base.
Ongoing discussion and ratings
The debate over AI’s role in gaming has also spilled over into social media, with some noting the significant impact of recent reviews. One tweet remarked, “This is going to be talked about a lot. Eurogamer’s review heavily lowered Arc Raiders’ score. It was once rated 94/100 on OpenCritic, making it one of the best-reviewed multiplayer games, but it’s now down to 88, mostly because of that 2/5 review. Ouch.”
While the controversy persists, the game’s loyal community continues to enjoy what it offers, demonstrating that despite criticism, its appeal remains intact.
