Digital Phablet – Anahid Fayyad and her husband Muthanna Gharaibeh donate their late son’s corneas to help patients regain their sight.
In a heartfelt display of compassion, former Jordanian Minister Muthanna Gharaibeh and actress Anahid Fayyad chose to donate the corneas of their son, Karam, in an effort to give others a second chance at life. This decision followed Karam’s passing in early March. The parents, both prominent figures in Jordan, transformed their profound grief into a message of hope and altruism by donating his corneas to support two recipients in need of corneal transplants.
This act was documented on social media, where a tweet from Hawacom TV highlighted how, despite the pain of loss, the family’s decision exemplifies the highest ideals of humanity. They aimed to turn their tragedy into an opportunity to inspire others about the importance of organ donation.
Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hamid Al-Qudah, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Hashemite University, explained that he received a call from Karam’s father shortly after his death, informing him of their decision to donate his corneas. This demonstrates a deep awareness of the significance of post-mortem organ donation. Experts note that such acts can give two individuals the gift of sight for a long period, fostering greater awareness and acceptance of organ donation within society.
He also emphasized Jordan’s advanced medical system, equipped with skilled professionals capable of handling organ transplants efficiently. However, he acknowledged that there is still room for improvement in national regulation to optimize resource utilization. To further promote a culture of donation, he suggested incorporating an option into the government’s “Sanad” application, allowing citizens to officially register their intent to donate organs after death. This measure could significantly encourage more people to participate in saving lives.
The family’s inspiring initiative received widespread praise on social media, seen by many as a powerful testament to how pain can be transformed into hope—serving as a model for others facing similar tragedies.
