Google has introduced a series of updates aimed at helping individuals find and remove personal information and sensitive images from their search results. To utilize these features, users must first provide Google with specific details so the platform can locate and delete their data.
The “Results about you” feature requests users to upload copies of their driver’s licenses, passports, or Social Security numbers. Google assures that “Results about you” employs strict security measures, including advanced encryption and rigorous protocols, to safeguard sensitive information and prevent misuse.
After submitting their details and Google verifies the information, the platform begins to continuously monitor for matching content. If any search results are found containing the user’s sensitive information, Google will alert them promptly.
Screenshots demonstrate the process, showing a user interface where individuals can see the results related to their listed data. It’s important to note that removing this information from Google Search does not delete it from the web entirely; however, it is a significant step in giving users control over their online privacy.
Additionally, Google has rolled out a new method to remove explicit images from search results. To use this, a user can click on the three-dot menu on an image, select “remove result,” and specify that the image shows sexual content of them. The process now allows multiple images to be submitted simultaneously, and users can opt into proactive filtering to block similar explicit results in future searches.
However, there are questions about the willingness of users to share their personal sensitive information with Google in exchange for these privacy features. Many may find the trade-off acceptable, given the increased control over their online footprint.
Over 10 million individuals have already used the “Results about you” tool to manage their personal data. To participate, users can access their Google account profile and navigate to the “Results about you” section or visit a designated webpage to start monitoring key personal identifiers like Social Security numbers and passports.
