There’s ongoing speculation about when the volatility in Google Search rankings will begin to settle down. While many SEO tools continue to indicate intense fluctuations over the past few weeks, some are beginning to show signs that things might be calming.
Google has not officially confirmed any search algorithm updates aside from the February 2026 Google Discover core update, which launched on February 5th and is still in progress. Apart from that, there’s no official word on the recent instability we’ve observed.
Looking back, we witnessed significant ranking volatility during the week of February 15th, as well as throughout most of last week. There were also notable fluctuations on February 10th, February 2nd, starting around January 29th, and around January 26th and 27th, with earlier turbulence on January 21st, 15th, 12th, and 6th. Before that, the December 2025 core update kicked off on December 11th at approximately 12:25 p.m. ET and wrapped up on December 29th around 2:05 p.m. ET, with spikes on December 13th and December 20th.
Although Google remains silent about these unconfirmed updates, evidence suggests that some of them targeted self-serving listicles. Analyst Glenn Gabe believes that the updates went beyond mere lists and may have involved changes to the Google reviews system, formerly known as the product reviews system.
Overall, there’s a lot of movement in Google rankings, indicating ongoing shifts in how sites are ranked.

Recent SEO Community Discussions
Webmasters have been discussing their experiences amid the ongoing volatility. Comments include reports of drastically reduced traffic and revenue, with many noting that volatility is at levels not seen in over a decade. Some sites experience massive, unpredictable shifts—being pushed upward briefly, only to drop again hours later.
Others observe that sites with stronger topical authority and clearer content structures are gaining visibility, raising questions about whether factors like entity relevance now play a bigger role.
Conversely, many reports suggest that spammy or low-quality sites are gaining ground, while well-established, high-value sites are struggling, especially if they lack recent updates or authority signals.
Furthermore, some sites show signs of recovery from the December 2025 core update, although this often correlates with other minor updates or review system tweaks.
Overall, the SEO community continues to monitor these patterns, with many looking for signs of stabilization or further shifts. Discussions are ongoing on forums dedicated to troubleshooting and understanding these ranking behaviors.
