A recent discussion on Digital Phablet highlights insights from John Mueller of Google regarding challenges with old domains. A domain owner shared on Reddit that after launching a new website on a recently acquired domain, the site isn’t appearing in Google search results, even for branded queries. The owner noted that the domain previously belonged to a completely different company and wondered if its past reputation might be affecting its current search visibility.
John Mueller responded that it often takes time for Google to fully reset its understanding of a domain, especially if it had a history of being parked or not actively used. He emphasized that patience is necessary, as Google gradually treats the site like a new, independent entity. Mueller recommended that the owner continue building out the website and enhancing its presence across various channels.
He advised that there’s generally no manual intervention needed in such cases, but it’s wise to verify in Search Console that no URL removal requests or manual penalties are pending. To rebuild visibility, Mueller suggested leveraging existing online presence:
– Make sure your LinkedIn profile links to your domain, and actively promote your website there.
– Engage on other social platforms such as YouTube or Reddit, creating company-branded profiles or pages to make your content easily discoverable.
– Focus on building recognition around your company’s name by ensuring it is consistently referenced across multiple channels.
Once initial visibility is established, the next step is diversifying your content outreach to reach audiences unfamiliar with your brand, which involves active participation across various platforms.
