Google has introduced a new checkout feature called the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), now available in AI Mode. This update was announced recently as part of their advertising news and is currently accessible for products listed on Etsy and Wayfair within AI Mode for Search and the Gemini app. Soon, additional retailers like Shopify, Target, and Walmart are expected to support this feature.
Several industry observers, such as Glenn Gabe and Brodie Clark, have already seen this functionality in action. Gabe shared screenshots showing that users can now see a purchase button directly within Search results, allowing for immediate buying in AI Mode. The checkout process is integrated seamlessly, highlighting a significant shift in how online transactions may occur through AI-powered search.
Clark noted that on Wayfair, a prominent “Buy” button appears next to product listings, enabling users to purchase items directly from the search results. Visuals of this process demonstrate how shoppers can discover and buy products, such as those from Wayfair, without leaving the search environment.
Google emphasizes that UCP’s potential extends beyond retail, aiming to lay the groundwork for more integrated and autonomous commercial experiences. The step-by-step visuals illustrate the entire shopping journey, from discovering a product in AI Mode to completing a purchase, all within the platform.
