Google AI Mode is set to become the default experience for Google Search soon, according to Logan Kilpatrick, the lead product manager for Google DeepMind, Gemini, and all AI initiatives at Google. This news follows Google’s decision to direct the URL google.com/ai straight to the AI Mode interface last Friday afternoon.
Kilpatrick shared the news via a short tweet around 7 pm ET, simply stating “soon :)”. Earlier, he announced the shortcut URL, which now directs users to AI Mode, indicating the upcoming shift in how Google Search will operate.
Earlier in the day, Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, also tweeted about the new feature, suggesting that users can now access AI Mode directly through a specific URL. He commented that the idea was “good” and confirmed the URL’s existence: https://t.co/Q75S7fHStY.
This development aligns with remarks made by Sundar Pichai and Liz Reid, the head of Google Search, who have previously emphasized that AI Mode represents the future of Google Search. While the transition toward AI Mode may not fully replace traditional search yet, it signals a move toward integrating AI more deeply into the core search experience.
Currently, AI Mode is available in 180 countries, expanding beyond its initial launch in the US, UK, and India. The full implications of AI Mode becoming the “default” remain to be seen, and it’s possible that future search experiences will blend traditional search with AI-enhanced features.
This shift prompts questions about what “default” really entails—whether it will replace the search interface entirely or coexist with it, offering a more integrated experience. The landscape of search continues to evolve rapidly as AI integration becomes central to user interactions.
