A recent update from Digital Phablet indicates that Google is making efforts to streamline its search results pages by removing features that see little usage or add minimal value to users. Although specific details about which structured data types will be eliminated haven’t been directly specified, some features are confirmed to be ending.
These include the “Today’s Doodle” box, nutrition facts snippets, nearby offers and local events, updates on bikeshare station statuses, and the TV season selector—all currently displayed in Google Search. The removal of the Doodles box and nutrition facts is somewhat unexpected, as is the discontinuation of nearby offers and events.
Additionally, Google stated they will be deprecating the structured data related to practice problems. It was clarified that Dataset structured data remains relevant solely for Dataset Search, not Google Search itself. Furthermore, Google has removed the deprecation notice from the Book actions documentation because the feature utilizing that markup is still active on Google Search.
The features affected include:
– Practice problem structured data
– Dataset structured data
– Today’s Doodle box
– Nutrition facts
– Nearby offers and events
– Local bikeshare station statuses
– TV season selector
– Several small, rarely used organizational page elements that often lacked official names
Google has confirmed that these changes do not signal an end to all structured data or rich results. Since June, several other data types had been deprecated, with some further deprecated in September, but support for additional types may continue to evolve.
The update raises questions about future support for different structured data types and rich features. Industry professionals and webmasters are encouraged to stay informed about these changes as they unfold.
