John Mueller from Google emphasized that large websites should avoid trying to force their pages into Google’s search index. In a comment on LinkedIn, he strongly advised against relying on methods to compel indexing, stating, “I strongly recommend not relying on trying to force indexing.”
This isn’t a new concern; it’s been addressed multiple times, including in 2020, when Google noted that sites needing manual indexing might be experiencing quality issues. More recently, Google also clarified that there’s no need to reindex pages through Search Console for usual updates.
Rehman Ameen prompted the discussion by mentioning some strategic workarounds for handling manual indexing issues. Mueller responded:
It’s highly recommended not to depend on forcing your pages into the index—this isn’t practical for any sizable site. Instead, utilize the existing mechanisms available, and for e-commerce, make use of the Merchant Center.
This discussion was part of a broader forum exchange, highlighting best practices for avoiding unnecessary attempts to manipulate indexation and encouraging sites to use recommended methods for ensuring their content is discoverable.
