Earlier this month, we highlighted Google’s testing of what was called contextual overlay link cards, featured in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Recently, Google officially began deploying these, which now resemble hover-over pop-up link cards.
Robby Stein from Google announced on X that in AI Overviews and AI Mode, groups of links will appear automatically in a pop-up when users hover over them on desktop. This allows quick access to a website for further exploration. He also mentioned that more descriptive and eye-catching link icons will be displayed within the response on both desktop and mobile devices.
During the testing phase, it was believed these enhancements would increase the chances of users clicking through to the linked sites, likely more than prior versions did. visual examples show the pop-up link cards in action.
Stein emphasized that the new interface aims to be more engaging, making it easier to reach quality content on the web. Though some are eager to see the actual data on performance, many agree that these updates represent a step forward in user experience.
Feedback from the community reflects enthusiasm, with numerous users expressing hope that this feature becomes a lasting change. Discussion about these updates is ongoing among digital marketers and SEO experts.
