The long-standing belief that service areas do not influence local search rankings is reinforced by recent findings from an API leak document. This document hints that service areas are primarily used for internal mapping and display purposes rather than impacting how businesses rank in search results.
Claudia Tomina discovered this information and shared her insights on LinkedIn. She explained that the Google API describes service areas as geographic zones an establishment serves, with a warning stating that this information isn’t intended for direct use. A screenshot from the API reveals that these service areas are stored for backend operations like display and internal geographic consistency, not as factors in the ranking algorithm.
She clarified her perspective by noting, “This is backend storage for display and internal geo-consistency, not an input to the ranking model.” She further emphasized that if service areas genuinely influenced rankings, Google would not advise engineers to avoid using them directly. While these insights suggest service areas are not part of the ranking factors, there is always room for change, keeping the discussion open.
