Google recently announced that Gemini 3 Pro is now powering AI Overviews for handling complex queries. Although the company initially mentioned this change last November, they later clarified that it was only AI Mode being enhanced with Gemini 3 Pro, not AI Overviews. Currently, both AI Overviews and AI Mode can leverage the capabilities of Gemini 3 Pro.
It’s important to note that Gemini 3 Pro isn’t used for every AI Overview. Its deployment is limited to more complex queries that require advanced processing power.
Robby Stein from Google shared the update on X, explaining that AI Overviews now utilize Gemini 3 Pro specifically for challenging topics. Behind the scenes, the search engine intelligently directs the most difficult questions to the cutting-edge model, similar to the approach used in AI Mode, while simpler questions continue to be handled by faster models. This feature is now available globally in English for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
In essence, the update enhances the AI’s ability to analyze and respond to complex inquiries more effectively by utilizing Gemini 3 Pro for the toughest questions, ensuring a more refined and accurate user experience.
