Google is no longer able to display ads in AI Overviews using the exact match type, marking a change from previous guidance in May when the platform suggested otherwise. Ginny Marvin, the Google Ads Liaison, clarified on social media that this update means the presence of an exact match keyword no longer prevents a broad match keyword from triggering an ad within an AI Overview. Since exact match keywords are not eligible to show ads in AI Overviews, they no longer compete with broad match keywords for triggering ads in that space.
In earlier communications from May, Marvin explained that only broad match keywords could trigger ads within AI Overviews, and exact match keywords wouldn’t participate in that process at all. The key change is that now, with updated policies, exact match keywords can contribute to ad triggers in AI Overviews, aligning with recent platform updates.
This shift reflects an evolving approach to how different keyword match types interact with AI-driven ad placements, highlighting the importance of staying current with platform updates to optimize campaign strategies across the board. The discussion about this change can be found in recent forum exchanges on social media, indicating industry awareness and adaptation to the new rules.
