Google is experimenting with a new way of displaying citations in AI Overviews. The design resembles a throwback to the earlier “SGE” format. Spotted by Sachin Patel on X, the update features large link cards positioned at the bottom of the AI summary section.
These link cards are oversized blue panels, resembling merged table cells, containing a thumbnail image (which doesn’t seem particularly useful), the website name, favicon, a brief description, and the page title. Previously, citations appeared on the right side of the results page, typically in a more streamlined manner.
This new format appears to be an error or bug, as the oversized blue box seems misplaced, possibly pushed under the main output unintentionally. Back in 2025, Barry noted a similar test showing a comparable layout, but in proper proportions. Given how unattractive and awkward this current test looks, it’s unlikely to be adopted widely. Perhaps the only reason for its existence is to increase visibility and generate more clicks, but that might also be a reason for its abandonment. The discussion about this change is ongoing in technical forums.
