Zootopia 2 opened in Chinese theaters, earning CNY228 million (approximately USD32.2 million) on its first day. The film set a new record for the highest single-day gross for a foreign animated movie in China. Released in North America simultaneously, the movie is projected to surpass CNY2.4 billion (around USD338.9 million) at the Chinese box office, according to data from analytics platform Maoyan Pro.
Nearly 67 percent of all screenings in mainland China on opening day featured Zootopia 2, with the original English version contributing CNY179 million to the overall box office. Its pre-sale revenue exceeded CNY300 million as of late November 25, setting a new record for animated films in the country.
The original Zootopia film debuted in 2016 and eventually earned CNY1.5 billion in China, becoming the highest-grossing foreign animation there. Additionally, Shanghai Disney Resort launched the world’s first Zootopia-themed attraction on December 20, 2023.
