Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan Province in central China, has issued a red rainstorm warning, prompting a full city shutdown and raising its emergency flood response level.
The city announced the highest level rainstorm alert at 1 p.m. yesterday, enforcing strict control measures citywide and elevating the flood control response from level four to level three.
Forecasts indicate heavy to torrential rain in Zhengzhou from today through 11 a.m. tomorrow, with some areas expecting up to 110 millimeters of rainfall, according to the local meteorological authority.
An official monitoring station in Zhongyuan District recorded the city’s highest rainfall of 122.4 millimeters as of 2 p.m. yesterday. The peak hourly rainfall reached 81.8 mm, with floodwaters rising to a maximum depth of nearly three meters.
Due to flooding, Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport has canceled approximately 16 percent of its scheduled flights. Local auto repair shops have been busy towing vehicles stalled by floodwaters, with tow-truck capacity stretched thin.
Currently, the Jingguang Road Tunnel remains closed due to flooding. The tunnel had previously been submerged during heavy rains in July 2021, which caused complaints about poor drainage and resulted in over 300 fatalities and significant destruction.
