Xiaomi’s automotive division will be recalling nearly a third of the SU7 vehicles delivered to address safety concerns linked to its advanced driver-assistance system. Starting today, 116,887 standard edition SU7 models produced between February 6, 2024, and August 30, 2025, will undergo an over-the-air update to install a free software upgrade aimed at mitigating safety risks, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation.
The affected vehicles exhibit issues with recognizing, warning, and responding to certain extreme or unusual driving scenarios when the autopilot navigation feature is active. The regulatory agency emphasized that if drivers do not intervene promptly, the risks of collisions could increase, creating a safety hazard.
In March, a severe traffic accident involving an SU7 with the Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) feature activated occurred on a highway, resulting in the fatalities of all three passengers. The system initially detected a temporary roadblock due to construction and issued a warning. The driver took control but was unable to complete evasive actions in time, leading to the crash.
This incident sparked widespread public concern regarding the safety of intelligent vehicle driver-assistance systems and raised doubts about some manufacturers’ promotional claims about their NOA features. It also drew the attention of regulatory authorities.
Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a draft for public feedback on safety standards for intelligent vehicle ADAS functions. The proposed guidelines include detailed technical requirements across various scenarios, including highway construction cases similar to the one involved in the SU7 incident.
The first model launched by Xiaomi’s auto division was the SU7, introduced in March last year with a starting price of approximately $30,360. By the end of August, more than 300,000 units had been delivered. Earlier this year, Xiaomi also conducted an over-the-air recall to upgrade the intelligent parking assistance system on about 30,000 SU7 standard models to improve safety.
